Overview

Thirteen days, two islands, one direction: Auckland to Queenstown with a driver guide, a bed every night and the big-ticket experiences in the price. The North Island comes first, with the Coromandel's beaches, the Waitomo caves and Rotorua's geothermal pools, then the ferry across Cook Strait and south through Kaikōura, Christchurch and Lake Tekapo to Aoraki/Mt Cook, finishing with two free days in Queenstown.

Day 1 is a welcome evening in Auckland, then Cathedral Cove and digging your own hot pool at Hot Water Beach. Waitomo brings a 90 minute Ruakuri Cave tour; Rotorua has a Māori village evening and a day at Wai Ariki Hot Springs. You roll to Wellington via Wai-O-Tapu, Huka Falls and gumboot throwing in Taihape, get a free day in the capital, cross the strait to Kaikōura with wine tasting on the way, walk the peninsula for the seal colony, and move on through Christchurch to Tekapo Hot Springs. Day 11 is the Hooker Valley Track under Mt Cook and a Lake Pukaki stop before dinner in Queenstown, where days 12 and 13 are yours.

You travel by private bus with a local driver guide, in the New Zealand winter, 6 May to 6 October 2026. Included are 12 nights in 4 to 6 bed hostel dorms, 6 breakfasts and 2 dinners, the cave tour, cultural evening, two hot springs, the Cook Strait ferry, wine tasting and the scenic hikes. It is for ages 18 and over, most people come solo, and you carry one 23kg bag plus a day bag. Everything in Queenstown is optional and paid on the day.

Common questions about this trip

  • Where does the tour start and when should I arrive?

In Auckland, with check-in at the hostel from 2pm on Day 1 and a welcome evening that night. The tour ends in Queenstown on Day 13 and there is no return transport, so fly out of Queenstown or carry on south.
  • Is there an age limit?

Yes, everyone must be 18 or older on the first day of travel. There is no upper limit. Most passengers travel solo, so you will not be the odd one out.
  • What's the accommodation like?

Twelve nights in 4 to 6 bed hostel dorms, shared with others on the tour. Private room upgrades are available on request when you book, at extra cost.
  • How much luggage can I bring?

One 23kg suitcase or backpack plus one day bag per person, strictly enforced. The bus is small and so is the hold.
  • How fit do I need to be?

Moderately. The included walks are Karangahake Gorge, the Ruakuri Scenic Walk, the Kaikōura Peninsula Walk and the Hooker Valley Track, all on formed tracks with some steps. The Hooker Valley Track is a gravel path over three swing bridges to Hooker Lake; in winter sections can be icy, so bring decent footwear.
  • What meals are included?

Six breakfasts and two dinners, one at the Māori village evening in Rotorua and one in Queenstown on Day 11. Everything else is at your own cost, and you will be in towns with plenty of options. Tell us about any food allergies when you book.
  • When does it run?

Winter only. Departures run from 6 May to 6 October 2026, which means cold, clear days in the South Island, snow on the mountains and the hot springs at their best. Pack warm layers.
  • What do the Queenstown days cost extra?

Everything in Queenstown is optional and paid on the day: skydive, bungy, jet boat, canyon swing, rafting, the Milford Sound day trip and the ski fields in winter. The same goes for Hobbiton, blackwater rafting, whale watching and the other extras along the route.
  • What's the cancellation policy?

Cancellation terms for this trip are set by the operator and confirmed on your booking voucher. Refunds mirror the operator's policy, if they can refund, so can we. Wanderlust handles the refund for you, refunds mirror the operator's terms 1:1 (including if the operator cancels) and we chase it on your behalf.
