Overview

The Tongariro Alpine Crossing is one-way, so you need a ride at both ends. This shuttle drops you at the start and collects you from the finish, leaving the 6 to 8 hours in between to you: over the active volcanic landscape and past the Emerald and Blue Lakes at whatever pace suits.

There are four departures a day from six stops in National Park Village, including the Park and Ride at the end of Findlay Street by the railway station, and pickups along the way such as the Mangahuia DOC campsite. Four to five return times give you room to take it easy. Miss the last 5:30pm shuttle and they'll come back for you, with a late fee.

This is a self-guided walk with some hard climbs. There are toilets along the track but no water or bins, so carry plenty of water and take all your rubbish out. Pack warm layers and a rain jacket, since the weather turns fast, and check the mountain forecast before you go. In winter the operator recommends going with a guide.
