Overview

Waiotapu sits on one of the most extensive geothermal systems in New Zealand, about 18 square kilometres of it. Sculpted by volcanic activity over thousands of years, it's billed as the country's most colourful and diverse geothermal attraction, and the key to everything you see lies below the surface.

Your ticket starts with the Lady Knox Geyser, which erupts once a day in a presentation at 10:15am. It's at a separate site just before the visitor centre, so arrive by 9:45. Afterwards the staff point you to the car park by the visitor centre, and you walk the park's tracks at your own pace. Most people take 1 to 2 hours.

You'll need your own transport: it's 27 minutes from Rotorua and 37 minutes from Taupo. Last entry to the park is 3pm. There are no toilets in the park or at the geyser, so use the visitor centre first. The main walk is fine for strollers, and the visitor centre has accessible toilets and parking.
