Waitomo is the easy day trip from Auckland: no hire car, no navigating, back in the city the same day. The tour picks up from the CBD and drives about two and a half hours south through South Auckland and the Waikato, with a scenic photo stop on the way.
At Waitomo you have around 30 minutes for the gift shop before a one hour guided tour of the cave. Your guide covers the history of the cave, the formations and the glowworms themselves, Arachnocampa luminosa, a species found only in New Zealand. Then you ride a flat-bottom boat along the Waitomo River in silence, looking up at the glowing ceiling.
Admission is included, plus an air-conditioned vehicle, Wi-Fi, and complimentary water and snacks. The tour runs with a minimum of 2 people and suits all ages.
