Overview

There's a moment on this trip nobody is ready for: the guide falls quiet, the boat slides into pitch darkness, and the ceiling switches on. Thousands of native glowworms, Arachnocampa luminosa, burning blue-green above your head like someone spilled a galaxy. The caves were first explored in 1887 by local Māori chief Tane Tinorau with English surveyor Fred Mace, and tours have been running for over 130 years, which is a long time for a trick to keep working.

You check in at the visitor centre on Waitomo Village Road 30 minutes before your tour, then walk the limestone chambers with your guide, including the Cathedral, the tallest chamber in the cave, with handrails and some stairs along the way. Then it's onto the boat for the Glowworm Grotto: no engine, no talking, your guide pulling you through by hand, because glowworms don't like noise or light. The silence is half the magic.

It's 45 minutes door to door, tours run multiple times daily between 9am and 5pm, and it suits every age. Wear comfortable shoes and a warm jacket, since the cave stays cool. The path suits anyone with reasonable mobility but there is no wheelchair access in this cave. Arrive late and your ticket is forfeited, so don't cut it fine. The visitor centre is cashless and has a cafe, restaurant and gift store. Pair it with Black Labyrinth or Black Abyss if you want your Waitomo day to end with an adrenaline spike.

Common questions about this trip

  • Where do I check in and how early?

At the Waitomo Glowworm Caves Visitor Centre, 39 Waitomo Village Road, 30 minutes before your tour time. If you arrive late or miss your departure your ticket is forfeited, so give yourself a buffer on the drive in.
  • What should I wear and bring?

Comfortable shoes with grip, because some areas of the cave can be wet and slippery, and a warm jacket, because the cave is cool year round. The site is cashless, so bring a card or phone payment for photos or the cafe.
  • How fit do I need to be, and is it wheelchair accessible?

You need reasonable mobility. The cave has good handrails and paths but also stairs, and the Glowworm Cave itself does not have wheelchair access. Ruakuri Cave next door is the wheelchair friendly option.
  • Is it suitable for kids?

Yes, it suits every age. The boat ride is silent and dark, so brief small children before you go in: no torches, no phones, no noise. The glowworms switch off when disturbed.
  • What happens in bad weather?

The tour runs underground, so rain on the surface rarely matters. Tours are weather dependent at the operator's discretion, and the operator decides on the day if the stream level affects the boat ride.
  • What costs extra?

Souvenir photos, food and drink at the visitor centre, and getting yourself to Waitomo. The tour itself and the guide are covered by the ticket.
  • How do I get to Waitomo without a car?

There is no transfer included. Waitomo Caves village is in the Waikato, south of Hamilton, and the simplest way without wheels is the Hobbiton and Waitomo Glowworm Caves day tour from Auckland, which includes this cave.
  • When are tours running?

Daily, 9am to 5pm, with departures multiple times a day. Book ahead for your preferred slot, especially in summer and school holidays.
  • What's the cancellation policy?

Cancellations or changes must be made by phone at least 24 hours before the experience; within 24 hours the booking is 100% non-refundable. Amendments can be made up to 24 hours before the tour, subject to availability. Group bookings need 72 hours' notice. If the operator cancels for health and safety, weather or unforeseen events, you get a 100% refund. Vouchers are not refundable. Wanderlust handles the refund for you, refunds mirror the operator's terms 1:1 (including if the operator cancels) and we chase it on your behalf.
