Overview

Whakarewarewa is a living Māori village in Rotorua, and these are Rotorua's newest geothermal walking trails, with access to an untouched geothermal landscape. You walk through manuka bush past hot spring lakes, thermal pools and mud pools, with geysers in the mix and views you can't get from anywhere else in town.

The trails are self-guided and run from 30 to 60 minutes each, on easy ground that suits a low level of fitness. Along the way you pass native ferns and edible plants, and there's no shortage of steam and colour for photos.

The village keeps opening new areas of the reserve, so the network grows over time. Allow about an hour and a half, and pair it with a guided tour of the village if you want the stories behind the land.
