Overview

The Hauraki Gulf Marine Park starts at the end of Auckland's Quay Street, and this safari goes out to see what lives in it. You leave from the Viaduct Harbour, opposite the Maritime Museum and a short walk from the city hostels, on a 20 metre marine research catamaran. Your hosts are marine scientists who collect data on every trip, so the commentary is the real thing rather than a script.

Check in with the crew at the top of the boarding ramp no later than 15 minutes before departure. The boat heads out through the inner Waitematā Harbour past the Harbour Bridge, North Head, Devonport and Rangitoto Island, then into the open gulf. A typical day turns up common dolphins and Bryde's whales; the list of possibles runs to orca, bottlenose dolphins, fur seals, sharks, manta rays, turtles and up to 26 seabird species including little blue penguins. You can join the research activities on board, and there is a presentation on the way home. If you do not see dolphins or whales, you get a voucher to cruise again free, with no expiry.

The trip runs about 4.5 hours, with around 4 hours on the water, seven days a week except Christmas Day. There is a licensed café on board, two toilets and limited indoor seating, so dress in layers with a shower-proof jacket and flat-soled shoes. You can bring your own lunch and non-alcoholic drinks. If you get seasick, take medication at least an hour before boarding. Every ticket contributes to marine conservation.

Itinerary at a glance

1 Inner harbour · Out through the Waitematā

The catamaran runs past the Harbour Bridge, North Head, Devonport and Rangitoto Island while the scientists set the scene. Orca and dolphins do turn up this close to the city, so eyes on the water from the start.

Common questions about this trip

  • Where do I check in and how early?

The boat berths at the Eastern Viaduct Marina, Berth 9, at the western end of Quay Street in downtown Auckland, opposite the New Zealand Maritime Museum. Check in with the crew at the top of the boarding ramp no later than 15 minutes before departure. It is an easy walk from the central city hostels, and the operator recommends public transport over driving.
  • What if we don't see anything?

If you do not see dolphins or whales on your trip, you receive a complimentary voucher to cruise again, with no expiry date. It is a return trip rather than a cash refund. The operator says this happens on fewer than 5 percent of trips.
  • What should I bring and wear?

Layers, a shower-proof jacket, flat-soled shoes (heels have to come off on board), a sun hat, sunglasses and sunscreen. Bring a camera and binoculars if you have them, plus any personal medication. You can bring your own lunch and non-alcoholic drinks, and reusable water bottles are refilled free at the café.
  • Is there food and a toilet on board?

Yes to both. A licensed café on board sells drinks and snacks, and there are two unisex toilets. Indoor seating is limited, so plan on spending most of the trip on deck.
  • I get seasick. Any advice?

Take your seasickness medication at least an hour before boarding, not once you feel it. The café sells Sea-Bands, ginger tablets and ginger beer for anyone caught out.
  • What happens in bad weather?

The operator reserves the right to cancel or change a tour at any time in the interests of passenger safety. Weather cancellations are announced before 10am using the contact details on your booking, so make sure your phone number and email are correct.
  • Can I come if I'm pregnant or have mobility issues?

In the third trimester the trip may not be suitable, depending on sea conditions, so check with your doctor. Light wheelchairs up to 67cm wide can be accommodated if you can manage two steps in the boarding area; heavy or motorised chairs are not suitable. Under-18s must be supervised by an adult at all times.
  • What's the cancellation policy?

Cancellation terms for this trip are set by the operator and confirmed on your booking voucher. Refunds mirror the operator's policy, if they can refund, so can we. Wanderlust handles the refund for you, refunds mirror the operator's terms 1:1 (including if the operator cancels) and we chase it on your behalf. Message us for the exact day-by-day terms before you book.

"Exceptional experience that must be done in Auckland! We saw dolphins (and different species), seals, birds, and a whale. It was very emotional. The crew and the researchers are extremely kind and share their knowledge and passion in a very educational way."
