Overview

If you only have an hour in Kaikōura, this is how to see its whales: from above, where you get the whole animal at once rather than a back and a tail. Sperm whales live off the Kaikōura Canyon year round, animals up to 18 metres and 60 tonnes, and from the air you can see them lying on the surface before they dive. The flight is 30 minutes and the crew's published success rate is 95 percent.

You check in at Kaikōura Airport at Peketa, just south of town on State Highway 1, 30 minutes before departure for the safety and whale briefing. The aircraft is a high-winged Gippsland GA8 Airvan carrying seven passengers and a pilot, with large dome windows, a window seat for everyone and headsets so the pilot can talk you through what is below. Once a whale is spotted the pilot circles it, keeping to the Department of Conservation Marine Mammal Regulations on height and distance. Beyond sperm whales you may see humpbacks, orca, pilot whales, dusky dolphins and seabirds, with the Seaward Kaikōura Range as the backdrop.

Allow an hour door to door. The maximum weight per passenger in the plane is 125 kg and children under 12 fly with an adult. A courtesy shuttle picks up from accommodation in town, the terminal is wheelchair accessible and parking is free. Flights run all year; rain rarely stops them, but high wind or poor visibility does, and then you are rescheduled or refunded.

Itinerary at a glance

1 30 min before · Check in at Kaikōura Airport

Arrive at the terminal at Peketa 30 minutes before your flight, or take the courtesy shuttle from your hostel. You get a safety briefing and an introduction to the whales you are looking for.

1 Take off · Out over the Kaikōura Canyon

The Airvan lifts off and heads over the coast to the canyon edge where sperm whales feed. The pilot and your fellow passengers scan the surface for the blow.

1 On the whale · Circling the sighting

When a whale is found the pilot banks around it so both sides of the plane get the view, holding the height and distance set by DOC regulations. Dolphins, seals and seabirds often turn up on the way.

1 Landing · Back at the airfield

You land about 30 minutes after take-off, with time at the terminal for photos before the shuttle takes you back to town.

Common questions about this trip

  • Where do I check in and how early?

At Kaikōura Airport, 617 State Highway 1 at Peketa, a few minutes south of town. Arrive at least 30 minutes before your departure time for the briefing. A courtesy shuttle picks up from accommodation in Kaikōura township, so tell us where you are staying.
  • What happens if we don't see any whales?

The crew publishes a 95 percent success rate, but these are wild animals and sightings are not guaranteed. There is no refund on a completed flight; the operator offers a discounted second flight if the first one comes up empty.
  • What if the weather is bad?

Rain is usually not a problem from the air. High winds or poor visibility ground the plane, and then your flight is rescheduled or refunded. The pilot decides on the day.
  • Is there a weight or age limit?

The fixed-wing aircraft has a maximum of 125 kg per passenger. Children under 12 must fly with an adult, and infants aged 0 to 3 travel on a parent's lap.
  • Will I get a window seat?

Yes. The GA8 Airvan is high-winged with large dome windows and carries seven passengers, each with their own window. Headsets let you hear the pilot's commentary over the engine.
  • When is the best time of year?

Sperm whales and dusky dolphins are resident year round, so any month works. Humpbacks, orca and pilot whales are migratory visitors and turn up seasonally. The crew says no time of day is better than another.
  • How long does it take?

The flight itself is 30 minutes. Allow one hour in total for the briefing, the flight and photos afterwards.
  • What's the cancellation policy?

Cancellation terms for this trip are set by the operator and confirmed on your booking voucher. Refunds mirror the operator's policy, if they can refund, so can we. Wanderlust handles the refund for you, refunds mirror the operator's terms 1:1 (including if the operator cancels) and we chase it on your behalf. "Everyone had a window seat and the pilot did a great job of making sure each side of the plane had a chance to see the whales. On our flight we saw a fin whale and then a sperm whale that stayed on the surface for a long time. It's a very different perspective seeing the whales from above .... the pilot gets you quite close. Would recommend this tour."
