About picking up in Byron Bay

Byron does not have a rental depot of its own. The nearest fleets are on the Gold Coast, about an hour north, and in Brisbane, about two hours, and some operators will deliver a van to Byron for a fee. It is still one of the best places to begin the northern leg to the Whitsundays and Cairns.

Byron is where a lot of East Coast trips really start, even when the van comes from up the road. Collect on the Gold Coast and you are back in Byron within the hour, pointed north with the whole tropical coast ahead of you.

From here the run north is the classic: Ballina and Yamba, then the long haul to the Whitsundays and Cairns, 14 to 21 days done properly. South drops you into the Sydney stretch through Coffs Harbour and the mid-north-coast beaches most people blow past.

Would rather not drive the first leg at all? We can set you up with tours out of Byron and a van waiting further north. Ask and we build it around your plan.

Heads up: there is no major campervan depot in Byron Bay itself. Most travellers collect from the Gold Coast (about an hour north) or Brisbane (about two hours), and a few operators deliver to Byron for a set fee. When you enquire we compare the nearest pickups and the delivery option and send back whichever works out cheaper for your dates.

Campervan hire in Byron Bay: common questions

Is there a campervan depot in Byron Bay? +

No. The nearest depots are on the Gold Coast, about an hour north, and in Brisbane, about two hours. We find the closest pickup for your dates.

Can a van be delivered to Byron? +

Some operators deliver to Byron for a set fee. When you enquire we compare that against collecting on the Gold Coast yourself and quote whichever is cheaper.

Where should I fly into for a Byron campervan trip? +

Gold Coast airport is the closest, about 45 minutes from Byron and near the depots. Ballina Byron is closer to town but has no rental fleet.

How old do I need to be to hire? +

Most operators rent to drivers 21 and over, with some taking 18 to 20 for a young-driver surcharge. Tell us your age and we quote accordingly.

Can I do a one-way north from Byron? +

Yes. You collect near Byron and drop in Brisbane, the Whitsundays or Cairns. We build the one-way fee into the quote so the price you see is the price you pay.
