Great Barrier Reef snorkelling day trips from Cairns and Port Douglas are how most people meet the reef: a morning cruise out, hours floating over coral with turtles underneath you, lunch on the boat, home by late afternoon. No certification needed, just a mask, fins and a stinger suit.

The hard part is choosing between outer reef boats, pontoons and coral cays. From $189.

Outer reef, pontoon or island: what each day is actually like

Outer reef boats run 90 minutes or so towards the edge of the continental shelf, where the water is clearest and the coral densest, usually visiting two or three sites.

Pontoons are platforms moored permanently on the reef: a stable deck with snorkelling off the edge, plus dry options like a semi-sub or underwater observatory. They suit nervous swimmers and anyone who gets seasick on a rolling back deck.

Islands and cays, Green Island, Michaelmas Cay and the Low Isles, put sand under your feet: a shallow lagoon straight off the beach, easier but less dramatic than the outer edge.

Stinger season, seasickness and what to bring

Stinger season runs roughly November to May and the boats supply suits, so wear them. Take seasickness tablets before boarding, and lean towards a pontoon or island day if you are prone. Pack reef-safe sunscreen, a hat, a towel, swimmers under your clothes and a dry bag. Visibility is generally best from June to October.

Snorkelling day trips: your questions

Is Cairns or Port Douglas better for a Great Barrier Reef snorkel trip?

Both reach the outer reef. Cairns has more boats, from $189 at Green Island. Port Douglas boats run to the Agincourt ribbon reefs on the shelf edge, and the Low Isles half day starts from $239.

Do I need to be a strong swimmer to snorkel the Great Barrier Reef?

No. Every boat here includes gear and has crew or lifeguards watching. If you are nervous, pick a pontoon or a cay.

Half day or full day on the reef?

Full days give you two to three outer reef sites. The Low Isles and Cape Tribulation half days from $239 and $199 are shorter, calmer and closer to shore.

Can I dive on a snorkel day trip?

On several. The All-Inclusive Outer Reef Day Trip includes a free scuba dive subject to medical clearance, Silverswift offers intro and certified dives, and the Port Douglas outer reef cruise and Dreamtime list dive add-ons.
