Overview

The hardest part of most reef days is the getting there. The answer is speed and stability: a fast motor catamaran that runs direct from Cairns in just 90 minutes, delivering you to a pontoon moored out on the Great Barrier Reef with the whole day ahead of you.

The rhythm is simple: check in at the Reef Fleet Terminal on Spence Street from 8:00am, depart Marlin Jetty at 9:00am, and you're stepping onto the pontoon by 10:30, reef below, platform above, no anchoring dramas or swell-y back decks. Then it's snorkelling on your schedule, off a base that doesn't move.

The pontoon format is the pick for anyone who wants maximum water time and minimum boat time, first-time snorkellers especially. Transfers from Cairns City or the Northern Beaches can be added if you'd rather skip the walk to the terminal.

"The glass bottom boat and semi submarine tour offered close views of the exquisite marine life & landscape. … We had included the helicopter tour in our package which was astounding; the view of GBR from top was simply stunning."

"The whole thing was very well organized and executed- there were tons of staff everywhere all the time to answer questions or help you with anything. Our little kids couldn’t really manage the snorkeling though we tried but the semi submarine let them see a shark and sea turtle amongst others which made it a success as far as they were concerned."
