Outer vs inner reef: the outer reef sites (Moore, Milln, Flynn, Agincourt, Opal) sit further offshore. The cays (Michaelmas Cay, Low Isles) are sand islands with a lagoon you can snorkel straight off. Pontoons are floating platforms moored on the reef, with facilities and a semi-submarine for people who would rather stay dry. More on the difference in Cairns reef: snorkel, dive or liveaboard.
Full Day Outer Great Barrier Reef Tour, from $269. A 25-metre performance sailing catamaran runs daily from Cairns to two outer reef sites. You get a guided snorkel tour, a marine naturalist talk, morning and afternoon tea, and a hot and cold buffet lunch, then ride home on the netted bow trampoline.
Included: snorkel gear, wetsuits in winter or lycra suits in summer, and limited prescription masks. Extra: scuba diving, the bar, photos, and hotel transfers (paid at check-in).
Who it suits First-timers who want the outer reef with a guide in the water, and anyone who wants to sail rather than motor.
Evolution Outer Reef Cruise (Snorkel), from $269. A 35-metre, three-deck superyacht with five hours at two outer reef sites. Lunch is cooked on board, lycra sun-suit hire is free, and there is a glass of wine and a snack platter on the way back. You can add up to three introductory or certified dives with the boat’s dive instructors.
Who it suits Anyone who wants a long day in the water, and non-divers who want to try a dive. It is a big boat (minimum 10, up to 160 aboard), so it is not the small-group option.
Silverswift Barrier Reef Cruise (Snorkelling), from $299. Unlimited snorkelling at three reef sites from the Cairns Reef Fleet Terminal, a guided snorkel tour at the third site, a snorkel brief at each, lifeguards, hot freshwater showers, free prescription masks and a hot and cold buffet lunch. Certified divers can do up to three guided dives with equipment provided.
Extra: a $10 fuel surcharge per adult, paid by link before travel or at check-in.
Who it suits Strong swimmers who want as much time in the water as possible.
Dreamtime Snorkel, from $249. Two outer reef sites, Moore Reef plus Milln or Flynn Reef, with Indigenous sea rangers on board sharing the Dreamtime stories of sea country. Up to 20 people, lunch and morning and afternoon tea included. Intro and certified dives are available at extra cost.
Who it suits Anyone who wants to hear about sea country from Indigenous sea rangers as well as swim on the reef.
Outer Reef Pontoon Snorkel Day from Cairns, from $319. A fast motor catamaran leaves central Cairns at 9am and takes about 90 minutes each way to a pontoon moored on the outer reef, where you spend around five hours. Lifeguards watch the snorkel area, and the glass-bottom boat, semi-submarine and underwater observatory let you see the coral without getting wet. Buffet lunch, a marine biology talk, hot showers and changing rooms are included. Extra: diving, a guided snorkel with a marine biologist, coach transfers and lockers.
Moore Reef Pontoon Day Tour, from $299, is the pontoon with a waterslide: snorkelling with instruction, glass-bottom boat, semi-sub, a tropical buffet lunch and a marine biologist presentation. It is run by Sunlover Reef Cruises. Hotel transfers are extra, and a $10 fuel surcharge per adult is paid at Sunlover check-in.
Who they suit Non-swimmers, nervous first-timers, and mixed groups where not everyone wants to snorkel.
Ocean Spirit Michaelmas Cay Day Trip, from $279. A 32-metre sailing catamaran to Michaelmas Cay with four hours at the reef: unlimited snorkelling with instruction, buoyancy vests, a marine biologist presentation, a semi-submersible or glass-bottom boat tour, a hot and cold buffet lunch and a glass of sparkling wine on the way home. Intro dives and a guided snorkel tour can be bought on the day.
Who it suits People who want a relaxed sailing day and shallow water off a sand cay.
Port Douglas: the reef from further north
Port Douglas boats run to the Agincourt and Opal ribbon reefs on the outer reef.
- Silversonic Barrier Reef Cruise (Snorkel), from $309. Three Agincourt ribbon reef sites, around five hours at the reef, unlimited snorkelling, a guided snorkel tour, snorkel safety officers, hot showers and a buffet lunch. A $10 fuel surcharge per adult is paid at check-in.
- Outer Reef Snorkel & Dive Cruise from Port Douglas, from $309. Up to three sites across Agincourt and Opal Reefs on a catamaran, with buffet lunch and free marina parking. An intro dive is about $102 extra and a certified dive about $81.
- Agincourt Reef Pontoon Snorkel Day from Port Douglas, from $329. A wavepiercer catamaran to a pontoon on the outer reef, with lifeguards, a 30-minute semi-sub tour, an underwater observatory and lunch. A $10 fuel surcharge per adult is paid at check-in.
All of them are on the Port Douglas reef tours page, and the two bases are compared in Cairns vs Port Douglas vs Airlie Beach for the reef.
Half days: best if you are short on time
- Low Isles Morning Snorkel Trip from Port Douglas, from $239. Four hours to a 55-acre coral cay, with 2.5 hours to snorkel the calm lagoon, a guided snorkel tour, an island walk past the lighthouse and the glass-bottom boat. Up to 20 people, back by 11:30am.
- Cape Tribulation Reef Snorkel, Morning Tour, from $199. Four hours from Cape Tribulation to two sites at Mackay Reef, about two hours in the water with personal instruction, up to 25 people, courtesy bus included. Sunsuits are for hire.
No half-day reef trip leaves from Cairns itself on our site.
Snorkel or intro dive?
Every trip here includes snorkelling. An introductory dive needs no licence: you dive with an instructor on the day. On the boats that list it (Evolution, the Dreamtime boat, the outer reef pontoon, Ocean Spirit and the Port Douglas outer reef cruise) it is an add-on. Silverswift lists dives for certified divers. If you want to get certified, the PADI Open Water Course, 5 Days with Liveaboard is from $1,199; overnight trips are on the diving and liveaboards page, and the course is explained in learn to dive on the Great Barrier Reef.
How we ranked them
We sell every trip on this page, and we ranked them on four things:
- Live price from our listings, plus extras collected on the day (fuel surcharges, transfers, dives).
- The reef itself: outer reef or cay, how many sites, and how long you spend in the water where the listing states it.
- What is included: lunch, guided snorkel, stinger or lycra suits, lifeguards, transfers.
- Who it suits: strong swimmers, nervous snorkellers, first-time divers and people short on time.
We do not quote operator ratings on this page because the figures we hold for these operators do not all match the ratings shown on their tour pages.

FAQs
What is the best Great Barrier Reef day trip from Cairns?
For most people, a full day on the outer reef. The Full Day Outer Great Barrier Reef Tour from $269 sails to two outer reef sites with a free guided snorkel tour; Evolution from $269 gives five hours at two outer sites with optional dives.
Is a pontoon or a reef boat better?
A boat that moves between sites suits confident snorkellers: you see two or three different reefs. A pontoon suits non-swimmers and mixed groups: lifeguards, a semi-submarine and an underwater observatory let you see the coral without swimming far.
Can I scuba dive on a Great Barrier Reef day trip without a licence?
Yes, as an introductory dive with an instructor. Evolution, the Dreamtime boat, the outer reef pontoon, Ocean Spirit and the Port Douglas outer reef cruise list intro dives as an add-on. Silverswift lists dives for certified divers.
How long does it take to get to the outer reef from Cairns?
The outer reef pontoon day lists about 90 minutes each way on a fast catamaran. The full-day trips from Cairns on this page run about 7 to 9.5 hours in total.
Is Cairns or Port Douglas better for a reef day trip?
Both reach the outer reef. More of the reef boats we sell leave from Cairns. Port Douglas boats go to the Agincourt and Opal ribbon reefs, and Port Douglas has the Low Isles half day.
Are there hidden costs on reef day trips?
Some trips add a $10 fuel surcharge per adult (Silverswift, Sunlover’s Moore Reef pontoon, Silversonic and the Agincourt pontoon day), and hotel transfers, dives and photos are extra on several. Each extra is listed on the tour page and above.
