How Much Does It Cost to See the Great Barrier Reef in 2026?

Great Barrier Reef prices, from an island day to a liveaboard: reef cruises, pontoons, flights and dive trips, what's included.

The Wanderlust crew · Updated · 9 min read

Short answer: seeing the Great Barrier Reef costs from $189 for an island or coral cay day trip, from $249 for a full-day outer reef cruise with lunch and snorkel gear, from $289 for a scenic flight, from $299 for a pontoon day, and from $789 for a multi-day dive liveaboard. A PADI Open Water course with a liveaboard is from $1,199. Most backpackers do one outer reef day from Cairns or Port Douglas and call it done.

Prices are per person in AUD, from our current listings (October 2026), and can change. Every tour in one list, sorted by today’s price, with what costs extra: Great Barrier Reef tours by price.

The price ladder

Islands and coral cays

From $189. The calmest water, on the inner reef rather than the outer reef.

  • Green Island Eco Adventure + Boat Snorkel Trip from $189: fast catamaran from Cairns, up to 7 hours on the island, a 1-hour boat trip to a snorkel site, snorkel gear or a glass-bottom boat tour, a marine biologist talk and a guests-only pool. Meals are bought on the island.
  • Low Isles Morning Snorkel Trip from Port Douglas from $239: 4 hours, 2.5 of them in the lagoon of a 55-acre coral cay, with snorkel gear, lycra suits, a guided snorkel, an island walk, glass-bottom boat access and morning tea. Max 20. Towels are not included.
  • Ocean Spirit Michaelmas Cay Day Trip from $279: a sailing catamaran from Cairns, 4 hours at the reef, snorkel gear with instruction, a semi-sub or glass-bottom boat tour, buffet lunch and sparkling wine on the way home. Intro diving is extra.

From Airlie Beach, the Whitsundays Day Sail, Langford Sandbar & Snorkel from $199 sails to a fringing reef off the Whitsunday islands for a snorkel, then the Langford Island sandbar to snorkel with the resident turtles straight off the sand. Morning tea, lunch, afternoon snacks, snorkel gear and stinger suits are included; ages 12+.

What the money gets you: sheltered water and time on land. Coral and visibility are generally better further out.

Outer reef day cruises

From $199.

This is the band to spend in: two or three outer reef sites, lunch, gear, a full day.

  • Cape Tribulation Reef Snorkel, Morning Tour from $199: 4 hours from Cape Tribulation, two sites at Mackay Reef, two hours in the water, gear and courtesy bus transfers. Suits are a hire extra. Only sensible if you’re already at Cape Trib.
  • Dreamtime Snorkel from $249: 8 hours from Cairns, two outer sites (Moore plus Milln or Flynn), Indigenous sea rangers on board, lunch and teas. Max 20. Diving is extra.
  • Full Day Outer Great Barrier Reef Tour from $269: 9 hours from Cairns on a 25m sailing catamaran, two outer sites, a guided snorkel tour, buffet lunch, snorkel and dive gear. Dives and hotel transfers are extra, paid at check-in.
  • Evolution Outer Reef Cruise (Snorkel) from $269: five hours at two outer sites, lunch, all gear and sun-suit hire, wine on the way back, up to three optional dives.
  • All-Inclusive Outer Reef Day Trip from Cairns from $279: an 18–39s crowd, all snorkel and dive gear, one free scuba dive (medical permitting), breakfast, lunch, afternoon tea, wine and reef tax. A $10 fuel levy is paid on board.
  • Silverswift Barrier Reef Cruise (Snorkelling) from $299: three sites, unlimited snorkelling, a guided snorkel at the third, lifeguards, hot showers, buffet lunch. $10 surcharge.
  • From Port Douglas: the Outer Reef Snorkel & Dive Cruise from Port Douglas from $309 does up to three sites across Agincourt and Opal Reefs with buffet lunch and all gear (intro dive approx $102, certified dive approx $81). The Silversonic Barrier Reef Cruise (Snorkel) from $309 runs three Agincourt ribbon reef sites, about five hours at the reef, with a guided snorkel tour and a $10 surcharge.

Pontoons

From $299.

A pontoon is a platform moored on the reef. You snorkel off it, and there are dry ways to see coral.

Who this suits: weak swimmers and anyone who gets seasick, since a pontoon doesn’t roll like a boat at anchor.

Scenic flights

From $289.

You see the reef, you don’t touch it. Add a flight to a snorkel day; don’t swap one for the other.

Liveaboards

From $789.

Per-dive maths: the 2D/1N liveaboard at $789 covers up to six dives with bed and board. A certified dive on the Port Douglas day boat is approx $81 on top of a $309 ticket. Four dives or more and the liveaboard wins.

Learn to dive

The PADI Open Water Course, 5 Days with Liveaboard from $1,199 is two days of classroom and pool, then a 3-day/2-night liveaboard with nine dives (four training, five pleasure, one at night). Certification, manual, log book, all gear including a dive computer, wetsuit and torch, dive insurance, Cairns City transfers and meals on board are included. Not included: a $100 Environmental Management Charge and a $25 fuel surcharge at check-in, so budget $125 on top. More in our guide to learning to dive on the reef.

What’s included versus what’s extra

Usually included: mask, snorkel and fins, lunch on full-day cruises, morning and afternoon tea, a reef talk.

Suits: lycra or stinger suits are included on Low Isles, Evolution, Silversonic and the Port Douglas outer reef cruise, and a hire extra at Cape Tribulation. Wetsuits are included on Silverswift and the PADI course, and hire extras on the Certified Dive Adventure boats.

Levies and surcharges: reef tax is included on the All-Inclusive trip and reef levies on both Certified Dive Adventures. The PADI course charges $100 plus $25 at check-in. Silverswift, Silversonic and the Agincourt pontoon each collect $10, and the All-Inclusive trip a $10 fuel levy.

Transfers: included on both scenic flights, the PADI course (Cairns City) and OceanQuest (Cairns accommodation). Extra on the Full Day Outer tour, the Moore Reef pontoon and both Certified Dive Adventures.

Diving: one free dive on the All-Inclusive trip; approx $102 intro or $81 certified at Port Douglas; excluded on Dreamtime; paid on the day on Ocean Spirit. Photos, bar drinks, towels and travel insurance are never included.

Budget tips

  1. Compare the Cairns outer reef cruises first. Dreamtime, the Full Day Outer Great Barrier Reef Tour, Evolution and the All-Inclusive trip start from $249, with lunch and gear included.
  2. Add the surcharge before comparing. A cruise with a $10 surcharge costs $10 more on the day than its listed price.
  3. One dive, no licence? The All-Inclusive trip from $279 includes it. The Port Douglas equivalent is $309 plus approx $102.
  4. Four dives or more? Liveaboard. The 2D/1N from $789 covers up to six dives, meals and a bunk.
  5. Stinger season is roughly November to May. Pick a trip that includes a suit so you’re not paying hire.
  6. Pontoon or cruise? Pontoons start from $299, full-day cruises from $249. If you can swim and don’t get seasick, a cruise moves you between more reef sites.

FAQs

What is the cheapest way to see the Great Barrier Reef? Cheapest right now: Green Island Eco Adventure + Boat Snorkel Trip at $189. If you’re already in the Daintree, the Cape Tribulation Reef Snorkel, Morning Tour is from $199. Full-day outer reef cruises start from $249.

Is the outer reef worth it? Yes. The outer sites are where the cruises and liveaboards go for coral and visibility. A Cairns outer reef cruise starts from $249, against $189 for Green Island.

Do I need to be able to swim? Not to see coral: the pontoons offer semi-subs, glass-bottom boats or an underwater observatory. To snorkel properly you should be comfortable in open water.

Can I dive without a certification? Yes, as an intro dive. The All-Inclusive Outer Reef Day Trip from Cairns includes one free dive (medical permitting), the Port Douglas outer reef cruise charges approx $102, and OceanQuest offers two intro dives.

Are reef taxes included? Depends on the trip. Included on the All-Inclusive day trip and the Certified Dive Adventure liveaboards. The PADI course charges a $100 Environmental Management Charge at check-in, and several cruises add a $10 surcharge.

Cairns or Port Douglas? Outer reef cruises start from $249 out of Cairns and $309 out of Port Douglas, and Cairns has more choice. Port Douglas trips head to the Agincourt ribbon reefs. If you’re staying in Cairns, stay in Cairns.
