Overview

A koala at breakfast sounds like a gimmick until the keeper walks onto the deck with one and the whole table goes quiet. This is a cooked breakfast on the Lilies Restaurant deck overlooking the park's lagoon, with a wildlife keeper and a koala joining you between 9:00 and 9:30am. Pat it, get the photo, and ask the keeper every koala question you have been saving. Then the rest of the park is yours for the day.

Breakfast runs from 8:30 to 9:30am, so you are in before the day crowd. Once the koala has done the rounds, your ticket covers full park entry, a 20-minute lagoon boat cruise with your time allocated on arrival, and the day's presentations: crocodile farm tour and cassowary feeding at 9:00am, the 10:00am snake show, crocodile feeding at 11:00am, the Crocodile Attack Show at 3:00pm and a koala talk at 4:30pm. Between shows there are over 2,500 metres of boardwalks through eucalypt woodland, rainforest and melaleuca wetlands across five precincts.

The park is at Wangetti, about 40 minutes north of Cairns and 25 minutes from Port Douglas, open 8:30am to 5:00pm daily except Christmas Day. Breakfast must be booked by 4:00pm the day before, subject to availability, because the koala does not do walk-ins. This ticket is self-drive; coach transfers from Cairns, the Northern Beaches, Palm Cove and Port Douglas are a separate add-on. It suits anyone who wants a full wildlife day on flat, easy paths, in any season.

"Very entertaining and fun. We had breakfast with a koala. We learned about local snakes, birds, kangaroos and of course crocodiles. Nice grounds. We found it well worth a day of our week in Palm Cove."

"We saw such a variety of wildlife during a half day trip, without having to walk a great distance. It was special to see a Cassowary for the first time, and the Koalas and Tamarins are adorable. We enjoyed the snake show and crocodile feeding, and found the keepers' commentaries very interesting and informative."
