Overview

Tropical North Queensland is the one place in Australia where you can get the reef and the rainforest in the same window, and this is the window: the door of a plane at up to 15,000ft, on the only skydive that takes off and lands in Cairns itself. The climb out is a scenic flight around the city, reef and ranges. Then up to 60 seconds of freefall at over 200km/h, and five to seven minutes under canopy drifting over cane fields.

Check-in is at 11 Spence Street in Cairns City, right beside the Reef Fleet Terminal, or a free bus collects you from selected local accommodation. All jumpers check in online before arriving. At the dropzone you meet your tandem instructor, get harnessed and briefed, and board. You land just south of Cairns at Edmonton, among the sugar cane, and a bus runs you back to the Cairns office. A sunrise jump option leaves the rest of the day free for the reef.

You are strapped to a tandem instructor the whole way, so the only skill required is getting on the plane. Minimum age is 16, with written consent and a parent or guardian present under 18. Everyone is weighed at check-in, and surcharges and a safety assessment apply above the operator's published weight threshold. Allow three to four hours, with a spare half-day in case the weather stalls things. Included: compulsory personal accident insurance, a three-month membership of the Australian Parachute Federation and a personalised certificate. Photos and video are extra, and you will want them.

Common questions about this trip

  • Where do I check in and how early?

Check-in is at 11 Spence Street, Cairns City, right next to the Reef Fleet Terminal. If you take the free transfer, your pick-up time is confirmed at booking and the bus brings you to check-in. All jumpers complete online check-in before arrival. The landing site is at 7 Page Road, Edmonton, and a bus returns you to the Cairns office afterwards.
  • How long does it take?

Allow three to four hours for the whole thing. Skydiving is weather dependent, so the operator recommends keeping at least half a day free, and it can run into a full day if the weather plays up. Keep your phone on and watch your email in the 24 hours before your slot.
  • Are there age or weight limits?

Minimum age is 16. Under 18s need written parent or guardian consent and a parent or legal guardian present at the dropzone. Children under 12 cannot ride the transfer bus. Everyone is weighed at check-in, including clothing and shoes, and above the operator's published threshold a surcharge applies and a drop zone safety officer assesses whether you can jump. Pregnant jumpers cannot skydive.
  • What should I wear and bring?

Loose, casual clothing such as active wear, jeans or tracksuit pants, with fully enclosed shoes like runners. Goggles are provided and fit over glasses or contact lenses. Leave your own camera behind: cameras cannot be used on a tandem skydive unless you have more than 200 jumps.
  • Can I scuba dive the day before?

No. Scuba diving shortly before a skydive is not allowed, and the operator publishes minimum surface intervals that you must clear before jumping. Plan your reef dive for the day after the skydive, or book the sunrise jump and dive later.
  • What happens if the weather is bad?

Skydiving is weather dependent and the operator decides on the day. If the weather is unfavourable they reschedule your jump to another date, valid within 12 months. Build a spare day into your Cairns stay.
  • Can I get photos and video?

Yes. Options are a handicam package shot by your instructor on a wrist camera, a dedicated camera flyer, or a combined package with both. Packages are bought on the day at the dropzone. Photos and video are delivered digitally, with the first shots shortly after landing and full processing taking up to 24 to 48 hours.
  • What's the cancellation policy?

Cancel up to 24 hours before departure for no fee, and within 24 hours a 100% fee applies. Rescheduling is allowed multiple times before the 24-hour window, and name changes are free. Bookings stay valid for 12 months from the original jump date. If weather stops the jump, the operator tries to rebook another date or location, and refunds are given only if rebooking or transferring isn't possible. Wanderlust handles the refund for you, refunds mirror the operator's terms 1:1 (including if the operator cancels) and we chase it on your behalf.

"When you jump down, the moment of free fall comes, oh my God! It's so cool! The howling wind wrinkled my face (a little ugly), but the view from the top was really beautiful…!"
