Overview

This is the Yasawas through the people who live there. The 8.45am catamaran takes about 1 hour 45 minutes to Kuata Island, and you're welcomed the traditional Fijian way, with a ceremony and a bowl of kava, before the day begins.

The cultural centre sits beside a historically significant cave, and local hosts explain its story. Then come a meke (Fijian music and dance) performance where you learn a few basic steps and rhythms, a hands-on craft workshop, a walk through local medicinal plants, and a Fijian cooking demonstration. In between, snorkel the coral gardens of Kuata's marine reserve.

A buffet lunch is included; drinks are extra. The day ends with a traditional farewell, and the boat leaves the island at about 4.05pm, back at Port Denarau around 6pm. Return hotel coach included. Pack a sarong or sulu to cover your knees for the ceremonies.

Common questions about this trip

  • What should I wear?

Swimwear for the snorkel, plus a sarong or sulu and a top that covers your shoulders for the ceremonies. Bring a towel, sunscreen and a hat.
  • Can children come?

Yes. Children 5 to 15 pay the adult price; infants 4 and under travel free, with their meals paid at the resort.
  • Is it the same island as the shark snorkel?

Yes, Kuata Island. This trip swaps the sharks for culture, with a snorkel in the marine reserve included.
  • Is there a fuel surcharge?

Yes. The ferry operator charges a fuel surcharge on this day trip, currently FJ$20 per adult and FJ$10 per child, paid at the check-in counter at Port Denarau in Fijian dollars.
  • How does the hotel pickup work?

The free coach runs from most Nadi, Denarau, Vuda and Wailoaloa hotels, and seats must be booked at least 24 hours ahead (we do it with your booking). Be at the pickup point 15 minutes early: drivers can't wait. Miss it and you'll need your own way to Port Denarau.
