Overview

Port Arthur is where Australia's convict story gets real: a whole sandstone settlement of ruins and restored buildings, more than 30 of them, set on a cold, beautiful harbour. This day trip from Hobart includes full site entry, with the 20-minute harbour cruise and free guide talks that come with it, and stacks the Tasman Peninsula's other sights around a flexible three or four hours on site.

You leave Hobart at 9:30am with hotel pick-ups from ten points across the city and the Eastern Shore. First stop is Pirates Bay Lookout above Eaglehawk Neck at 10:40am, then the Dog Line, the convict-era guard post on the isthmus, then ten minutes at the Tasmanian Chocolate Foundry. The Port Arthur Lavender Farm is an optional 30 or 60 minute stop before the Historic Site around 11:40am. There you choose: four hours at Port Arthur, or three hours plus a 50-minute round trip to Remarkable Cave, where the sea has carved a tunnel through the cliff. An Isle of the Dead cruise is an optional extra at 2:20pm. You leave Port Arthur at 3:40pm and are back in Hobart at 5:30pm.

It is an eight-hour day with a local guide at the wheel. Site entry is included; food, drinks and tastings are not, and Remarkable Cave needs a national parks pass paid on site. Wear comfortable walking shoes and bring a layer, water, sunscreen and a camera: the site is largely outdoors, some ground is uneven, and peninsula weather changes its mind. Runs year-round; the site is open daily except Christmas Day.

"I particularly enjoyed the stop at the Lavender Farm, which was a wonderful addition to the day and a great opportunity to experience another side of Tasmania. Port Arthur itself was confronting, beautiful and deeply moving. It is a place that everyone visiting Tasmania should experience, and having the time to explore and reflect made it even more memorable."
