Overview

This is the reef-shark snorkel as a day trip. The 8.45am catamaran takes about 1 hour 45 minutes through the Mamanucas to Barefoot Kuata Island Resort, the first island of the Yasawas, with its white beach, clear water and odd volcanic rock formations.

After a safety briefing on the beach, you head out by boat with guides who've spent hundreds of hours getting to know the resident sharks. The water at the site is 4 to 6 metres deep, the guides stay in the water with you and watch the sharks' behaviour, and life jackets are available. You'll mostly see white-tip and black-tip reef sharks up to about 1.8 metres (they look about 25 percent bigger through a mask), often several at once. They're wild, so it's not guaranteed, but the success rate is over 95 percent.

The rest of your five hours on the island is for the buffet lunch, kayaks, paddleboards and the snorkel gear. Ask for a vegetarian lunch when you book. The boat leaves the island at about 4.05pm and is back at Port Denarau around 6pm, with the return hotel coach included.

Common questions about this trip

  • Is it safe?

The guides brief you on the beach, stay in the water with you the whole time and watch the sharks' behaviour closely. The reef sharks here grow to about 1.8 metres. Life jackets are available if you're not a confident swimmer.
  • Do I need to be a strong swimmer?

You need to be comfortable snorkelling in open water 4 to 6 metres deep. Guides stay with you and life jackets are available for less confident swimmers.
  • Can children come?

From age 5, if they're competent in the water. There's no child rate, and infants can't come.
  • Is there a fuel surcharge?

Yes. The ferry operator charges a fuel surcharge on this day trip, currently FJ$15 per adult and FJ$10 per child, paid at the check-in counter at Port Denarau in Fijian dollars.
  • How does the hotel pickup work?

The free coach runs from most Nadi, Denarau, Vuda and Wailoaloa hotels, and seats must be booked at least 24 hours ahead (we do it with your booking). Be at the pickup point 15 minutes early: drivers can't wait. Miss it and you'll need your own way to Port Denarau.
  • What's the cancellation policy?

Cancellation terms for this trip are set by the operator and confirmed on your booking voucher. Refunds mirror the operator's policy, if they can refund, so can we. Wanderlust handles the refund for you, refunds mirror the operator's terms 1:1 (including if the operator cancels) and we chase it on your behalf. Message us for the exact day-by-day terms before you book.
