Uluru is five and a half hours from Alice Springs, and plenty of travellers fly into the Centre via Alice. This tour solves the distance. You pick where it starts and ends: Alice Springs return, Alice to Ayers Rock Resort, Ayers Rock Resort to Alice, or a shorter Ayers Rock Resort return.
From Alice you're collected at 7am and head south, with a stop at Erldunda for breakfast (bought on the day) and a lookout over Mount Connor. Ayers Rock Resort guests are picked up late morning. Everyone meets at the Aboriginal Cultural Centre, built from 90,000 mud bricks with the local Anangu people, then walks the Mala Walk along the base of Uluru past rock art while your guide shares Anangu stories. Next is Mutitjulu Waterhole, home of the ancestral water snake Wanampi.
The day ends the way it should: sunset at Uluru with dinner and a glass of bubbly (two drink vouchers each, or BYO beer). Resort guests are dropped back after dinner; Alice Springs guests get in after midnight, so bring a travel pillow. Climbing Uluru isn't permitted, and the Uluru-Kata Tjuta National Park pass ($38) is bought separately.
