Overview

The highway north from Alice is long, and this is the way to do it without wasting it: three days, the big stops and the good pubs, finishing in Darwin as the sun goes down.

Day one crosses the Tropic of Capricorn to Karlu Karlu, the Devils Marbles, with their deep cultural history and strange balanced geology, then lunch beside Lake Mary Ann at Tennant Creek and a night at the Daly Waters pub, the most famous watering hole in the outback, with dinner and live music. Day two is thermal: the Mataranka Hot Springs, a pool-noodle float down Bitter Springs, a stop in Katherine and a swim at Edith Falls in Nitmiluk National Park before another iconic outback pub at Adelaide River.

Day three is Litchfield National Park: Wangi Falls, Florence Falls, Tolmer Falls and Buley Rockhole, plus the magnetic and cathedral termite mounds, then into Darwin. Runs Mondays from Alice Springs; the reverse trip leaves Darwin on Fridays.
