Overview

Alice Springs is Mparntwe to the Arrernte people, and its modern story starts with a telegraph line. This tour joins the dots, from the station that first put the town on the map to the services that still keep the outback connected.

You'll visit School of the Air, which teaches primary school kids on remote properties across the Northern Territory, and the Royal Flying Doctor Service, which flies medical care and emergency evacuations to people living and working in remote Australia. Then it's the Telegraph Station, the town's first European settlement, which relayed messages between Darwin and Adelaide.

The tour finishes on Anzac Hill, with Alice Springs spread out against the MacDonnell Ranges. It's easy going, with pickup, afternoon tea and all entry fees included. It runs daily from April to October, and on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays from November to March.

Common questions about this trip

  • What's the cancellation policy?

Day tours and Uluru transfers: cancel 4 or more days before departure for a refund less a $20 admin fee. Within 3 days of departure the booking is non-refundable, but the amount is kept as a credit valid until the end of the current season (seasons run 1 April to 31 March). You can change your date once at no extra cost outside that 3-day window, subject to availability. If the operator cancels because of weather or other events outside its control, you are offered another date or a refund less any unrecoverable costs. Wanderlust handles the refund for you, refunds mirror the operator's terms 1:1 (including if the operator cancels) and we chase it on your behalf.
