Overview

This is the next step after Open Water, done in warm Yasawa water. You spend four nights at Mantaray Island Resort on Nanuya Balavu Island with the resort's dive team and finish with an SSI Advanced certification and photo ID card. You need an Open Water certification from any recognised agency to start.

The course is theory plus five specialty dives drawn from deep diving, night diving, search and recovery, underwater navigation, cavern diving and digital underwater photography. That means sitting at depth, navigating by compass, and dropping in after dark to see what the reef does when it goes to sleep. All dive gear is included, slip-on shorty fins too. When you're not diving there's a house reef off the front of the resort, a pool, a beach bar and, from May to October, mantas in the channel.

Coach transfers and the return ferry are included, plus a full-day Malamala Beach Club pass for before or after and a welcome pack with a sulu, drink bottle and waterproof bag. Sleep in the 32-bed air-con Paradise Dorm, a treehouse bure (shared bathroom), or a seaside bure, reef bure, family reef bure or beachfront villa with your own bathroom. Meals are on the resort's compulsory meal plan, paid on the island.

Itinerary at a glance

1 Day 1 · Ferry to Mantaray Island

Hotel coach and the 8.45am catamaran from Port Denarau, on the island around 11.35am. Check in, meet the dive team and start your theory.

2 Days 2 to 4 · Specialty dives

Your five specialty dives, spread across the stay: deep, night and navigation work, plus search and recovery, a cavern dive or underwater photography. Between dives, snorkel the house reef or swim with the mantas if they're in the channel (May to October).

5 Day 5 · Certified, back to Denarau

Pick up your card, then the mid-afternoon boat back to Port Denarau, in at about 6pm. Plan your flight for the next day: no flying for 24 hours after diving.

Common questions about this trip

  • What do I need to join?
    An Open Water certification from any recognised agency. If you've ever had asthma or epilepsy, you need a doctor's medical clearance to dive, and you'll fill in the dive operator's medical questionnaire on the island.

  • Do I need special insurance?
    Yes. Your travel insurance must cover scuba diving.

  • Can I fly straight after?
    No. Divers can't fly for 24 hours after diving, so book your flight home for at least the day after you get back.

  • Are meals included?
    No. Mantaray Island Resort runs a compulsory meal plan, paid on the island in Fijian dollars, and adds a resort fuel surcharge (currently FJ$10 per person per night).

  • Is there a fuel surcharge?
    Yes. The ferry operator sets it monthly, currently FJ$20 per person, and it's paid locally before you board rather than included in this price. Budget for it in Fijian dollars.

  • How is the booking confirmed?
    Island beds are confirmed on request, and we come back to you within 48 hours. If your dates can't be confirmed, you don't pay for it.

  • What's the cancellation policy?
    For Welcome and Departure Packs, there is no fee 31 or more days out, 50% from 15 to 30 days, and full charge at 14 days or less. For packages and island stays, the deposit is non-refundable 81 or more days out, the higher of 10% or the deposit applies from 46 to 80 days, and 100% applies at 45 days or less. Date changes up to 80 days out have no amendment fee. The operator can cancel vessel departures or vary itineraries for adverse conditions. Wanderlust handles the refund for you, refunds mirror the operator's terms 1:1 (including if the operator cancels) and we chase it on your behalf.
