Overview

Kuata is where the Yasawa chain begins, and the catamaran has you on the sand by about 10.30am. It's a striking island: white beaches, volcanic peaks behind the resort and the Phantom Rock caves around the point. The whole place sits inside a marine protected area, and the resort runs on a simple, low-impact, barefoot rhythm.

The reef is the reason to come. An onsite marine biologist talks you through what lives out there, and you can book the guided reef-shark snorkel, an introductory dive with reef sharks or, for certified divers, the Awakening Shark Dive. Snorkel gear, kayaks and paddleboards are free to use, and the summit trail is the place to be at sunset.

Beds run from the 8-bed Wasawasa dorm (unisex or girls-only, fan-cooled, shared bathrooms) to Tei Tei garden bures and three styles of beachfront bure with their own bathrooms. Your return ferry and Nadi hotel coach are included. Meals are on the resort's compulsory meal plan, paid on the island.

Itinerary at a glance

1 Day 1 · Port Denarau to Barefoot Kuata

Hotel coach to Port Denarau, check in at the terminal at least 30 minutes before the 8.45am catamaran, then north through the islands. You're on the beach by about 10.30am. Lunch, a swim off the beach, then the summit trail for sunset over the chain.

2 Day 2 · Barefoot Kuata to Port Denarau

A full morning and early afternoon on the island: book the reef-shark snorkel, paddle out, or snorkel the protected reef. The southbound boat collects you at about 4.05pm. The catamaran is back at Port Denarau around 6pm, and the coach drops you at your hotel.

Common questions about this trip

  • Is the shark snorkel included?

No. The guided reef-shark snorkel and the shark dives are paid activities at the resort. Snorkel gear, kayaks and paddleboards are free.
  • Are meals included?

The resort is the only place to eat on the island, so it runs a compulsory meal plan, paid at the resort in Fijian dollars. It covers lunch and dinner on the day you arrive and breakfast on the day you leave. Tell us about dietary needs when you book and we'll pass them on.
  • Which room should I pick?

Solo and on a budget: the 8-bed Wasawasa dorm, unisex or girls-only. For your own space, the Tei Tei garden bure is the entry level, and the Siga, Levu and Rai Ki Waya bures sit on the beachfront with their own bathrooms. All are fan-cooled.
  • Is there a fuel surcharge?

Yes. The ferry operator sets it monthly, currently FJ$20 per person, and it's paid locally before you board rather than included in this price. Budget for it in Fijian dollars.
  • How is the booking confirmed?

Island beds are confirmed on request with the resort, and we come back to you within 48 hours. If your date can't be confirmed, you don't pay for it.
  • What's the cancellation policy?

For Welcome and Departure Packs, there is no fee 31 or more days out, 50% from 15 to 30 days, and full charge at 14 days or less. For packages and island stays, the deposit is non-refundable 81 or more days out, the higher of 10% or the deposit applies from 46 to 80 days, and 100% applies at 45 days or less. Date changes up to 80 days out have no amendment fee. The operator can cancel vessel departures or vary itineraries for adverse conditions. Wanderlust handles the refund for you, refunds mirror the operator's terms 1:1 (including if the operator cancels) and we chase it on your behalf.
