Overview

Barefoot Manta sits on Drawaqa Island in the Yasawas' manta region, wrapped by three beaches. Sunrise Beach is for an early paddle, Sunset Beach for the end of the day, and Manta Ray Beach looks straight over the channel where a population of manta rays turns up every year between May and October.

The resort's in-house marine biology team studies the mantas, giant clams and corals of the marine protected area around the island, and you can join a marine biology tour or coral planting. The manta swim is a paid activity that runs in season when the rays are in the channel; it isn't guaranteed. Non-motorised water sports gear is free, and diving, crafts, island walks and volleyball fill the rest.

Sleep in the 7-bed Vai dorm (unisex or girls-only, fan-cooled) or one of three beachfront bures with their own bathrooms: the Adi with a queen bed, the larger Levu, or the Yanuyanu with an outdoor shower. Return ferry and Nadi hotel coach are included; meals are on the compulsory meal plan, paid at the resort.

Itinerary at a glance

1 Day 1 · Port Denarau to Barefoot Manta

Hotel coach to Port Denarau, check in at the terminal at least 30 minutes before the 8.45am catamaran, then north through the islands. The catamaran reaches Drawaqa Island in the late morning. Lunch, then pick a beach: Sunset Beach is the obvious choice by evening.

2 Day 2 · Barefoot Manta to Port Denarau

Morning on Manta Ray Beach. In season, this is when the crew calls the manta swim if the rays are in the channel. The southbound boat collects you in the afternoon. The catamaran is back at Port Denarau around 6pm, and the coach drops you at your hotel.

Common questions about this trip

  • Will I see manta rays?

Mantas visit the channel between May and October, and the manta swim runs in season when they're there. They're wild animals, so sightings aren't guaranteed, and outside the season you snorkel the reef instead. The swim is a paid activity at the resort.
  • Are meals included?

The resort is the only place to eat on the island, so it runs a compulsory meal plan, paid at the resort in Fijian dollars. It covers lunch and dinner on the day you arrive and breakfast on the day you leave. Tell us about dietary needs when you book and we'll pass them on.
  • Is there a dorm?

Yes, the 7-bed Vai dorm, unisex or girls-only, with fans and shared bathrooms. The private options are all beachfront bures with their own bathrooms.
  • Is there a fuel surcharge?

Yes. The ferry operator sets it monthly, currently FJ$20 per person, and it's paid locally before you board rather than included in this price. Budget for it in Fijian dollars.
  • How is the booking confirmed?

Island beds are confirmed on request with the resort, and we come back to you within 48 hours. If your date can't be confirmed, you don't pay for it.
  • What's the cancellation policy?

For Welcome and Departure Packs, there is no fee 31 or more days out, 50% from 15 to 30 days, and full charge at 14 days or less. For packages and island stays, the deposit is non-refundable 81 or more days out, the higher of 10% or the deposit applies from 46 to 80 days, and 100% applies at 45 days or less. Date changes up to 80 days out have no amendment fee. The operator can cancel vessel departures or vary itineraries for adverse conditions. Wanderlust handles the refund for you, refunds mirror the operator's terms 1:1 (including if the operator cancels) and we chase it on your behalf.
