Overview

Mantaray Island Resort sits on Nanuya Balavu Island in the heart of the Yasawas' manta region, between two white-sand beaches. From May to October, mantas feed in the nearby channel and the resort runs swims when they're in; outside that, the reef snorkelling is still the main event.

It's a busy, social stop. There's a hilltop restaurant with ocean views, a beachfront bar that does pizza, a freshwater pool, Wi-Fi and phone coverage. Activities include snorkelling, diving, island walks, beach volleyball, paddleboarding, kayaking, craft workshops and village visits.

The Paradise Dorm is 32 beds in bunk cubicles, air-conditioned. Treehouse bures share a bathroom; seaside bures, reef bures, family reef bures and beachfront villas all have their own. The catamaran arrives around 11.35am and leaves at about 2.55pm next day. Return ferry and Nadi hotel coach are included; meals are on the compulsory meal plan, and the resort charges its own fuel surcharge, both paid on the island.

1 Day 1 · Port Denarau to Mantaray Island

Hotel coach to Port Denarau, check in at the terminal at least 30 minutes before the 8.45am catamaran, then north through the islands. You're on the island around 11.35am, in time for lunch. Afternoon on the beach or in the pool, then the hilltop restaurant and the beach bar.

2 Day 2 · Mantaray Island to Port Denarau

In season, the morning is when a manta swim might be called. Otherwise, snorkel the reef or kayak between the two beaches. The southbound boat leaves at about 2.55pm. The catamaran is back at Port Denarau around 6pm, and the coach drops you at your hotel.

  • Will I swim with manta rays?
    Possibly, if you come between May and October. Mantas feed in the channel near the island in season and the resort runs swims when they're there, as a paid activity. They're wild animals, so it isn't guaranteed.

  • What's the dorm like?
    The Paradise Dorm has 32 beds in 16 bunk cubicles, air-conditioned, with shared bathrooms. It's big and social. For more privacy, the treehouse bures are the cheapest private option and share a bathroom.

  • Are there extra charges on the island?
    Two. The compulsory meal plan, since the resort is the only place to eat, and the resort's own fuel surcharge, currently FJ$10 per person per night, both paid in Fijian dollars. The ferry fuel surcharge (FJ$20 per person) is separate.

  • Is there a fuel surcharge?
    Yes. The ferry operator sets it monthly, currently FJ$20 per person, and it's paid locally before you board rather than included in this price. Budget for it in Fijian dollars.

  • How is the booking confirmed?
    Island beds are confirmed on request with the resort, and we come back to you within 48 hours. If your date can't be confirmed, you don't pay for it.

  • What's the cancellation policy?
    For Welcome and Departure Packs, there is no fee 31 or more days out, 50% from 15 to 30 days, and full charge at 14 days or less. For packages and island stays, the deposit is non-refundable 81 or more days out, the higher of 10% or the deposit applies from 46 to 80 days, and 100% applies at 45 days or less. Date changes up to 80 days out have no amendment fee. The operator can cancel vessel departures or vary itineraries for adverse conditions. Wanderlust handles the refund for you, refunds mirror the operator's terms 1:1 (including if the operator cancels) and we chase it on your behalf.
