Overview

Mai Sunset Beach Resort is a small, quiet stay on Naviti Island in the Yasawas' manta region, with a palm-fringed beach and tropical gardens leading to the bures. As the name says, it faces the sunset.

It has its own local speciality. The water off the front is one of the few places in the Pacific where nama (sea grapes) grows, and you can join the harvest. The activity list also covers guided snorkelling, manta swims from May to October, sunset tubing, coral planting, weaving and island walks. Kayaks, paddleboards and Wi-Fi are free.

The cheapest bed is a 4-bed shared garden bure with single beds and a fan, so it feels more like a room than a dorm. Private choices are garden bures, beach tents, beach bures a few steps from the sand with a queen bed, ensuite and balcony, and a deluxe two-bedroom beach bure. The catamaran arrives around midday and leaves at about 2.35pm next day. Return ferry and Nadi hotel coach are included; meals are on the compulsory meal plan, paid at the resort.

2 Day 2 · Mai Sunset to Port Denarau

Morning snorkel, a manta swim if they're around in season, or the nama harvest. The southbound boat leaves at about 2.35pm. The catamaran is back at Port Denarau around 6pm, and the coach drops you at your hotel.

Common questions about this trip

  • What is nama?

Sea grapes, a local seaweed that grows in the shallows off the resort. Mai Sunset is one of the few places in the Pacific where you'll find it, and guests can join the harvest.
  • Is there a dorm?

The shared garden bure sleeps four in single beds, with a shared bathroom and a fan. It's the budget choice and a lot smaller than a typical island dorm.
  • Are meals included?

The resort is the only place to eat on the island, so it runs a compulsory meal plan, paid at the resort in Fijian dollars. It covers lunch and dinner on the day you arrive and breakfast on the day you leave. Tell us about dietary needs when you book and we'll pass them on.
  • Is there a fuel surcharge?

Yes. The ferry operator sets it monthly, currently FJ$20 per person, and it's paid locally before you board rather than included in this price. Budget for it in Fijian dollars.
  • How is the booking confirmed?

Island beds are confirmed on request with the resort, and we come back to you within 48 hours. If your date can't be confirmed, you don't pay for it.
  • What's the cancellation policy?

For Welcome and Departure Packs, there is no fee 31 or more days out, 50% from 15 to 30 days, and full charge at 14 days or less. For packages and island stays, the deposit is non-refundable 81 or more days out, the higher of 10% or the deposit applies from 46 to 80 days, and 100% applies at 45 days or less. Date changes up to 80 days out have no amendment fee. The operator can cancel vessel departures or vary itineraries for adverse conditions. Wanderlust handles the refund for you, refunds mirror the operator's terms 1:1 (including if the operator cancels) and we chase it on your behalf.

"My girlfriend and I spent two weeks travelling the Yasawa islands and Mai sunset was our favourite resort to stay at by far. The facilities are fantastic, we stayed in the dorms which only had four beds and a beautiful outdoor shower."
