Your first-week admin, with or without a package
What every working holiday maker sorts out in the first week or two.
1. Tax File Number
Apply online with the ATO once you're in Australia. It's free. Without one, your employer has to tax you at the top rate.
2. Bank account
Most of the big Australian banks let you open an account online before you land, then confirm your ID in a branch.
3. Phone number
A prepaid SIM or eSIM from a supermarket, the airport or a phone shop. Employers will want an Australian number.
4. Certificates for the job you want
An RSA to serve alcohol in bars and restaurants (each state runs its own), and a White Card to work on building sites.
5. Super
Your employer pays superannuation on top of your wage into a fund in your name. You can claim it back after you leave Australia (it's taxed).
6. Work, and your second year
Planning a second year? You need 88 days of specified work in regional Australia, and city jobs don't count. Check a job's postcode before you take it, and send us your CV for job matching.
Arrival weeks start at $739 per person. Heading up the coast after? The 37- and 44-day trips above are an arrival week and the East Coast to Cairns in one booking. All the trips here are run by the operator named on each tour page; we book it and send you their ticket.
Working holiday arrival packages prices: your questions
What is the cheapest working holiday arrival package?
Melbourne Arrival Week, 5-Day Guided Tour with Airport Pick-Up at $739 per person is the lowest-priced working holiday arrival package on this page today.
What costs extra on the day?
2 of 5 listings name a cost not in the price, such as meals not listed (allow roughly $30 to $50 a day). The table shows each one; the tour page has the full list.
What's included in the price of working holiday arrival packages?
It depends on the trip. Of the 5 we sell: 5 include pickup or transfers; 2 include gear and equipment; 5 include some meals or snacks; 5 include accommodation. Each tour page lists exactly what's included and what isn't.
How do I get the cheapest price on working holiday arrival packages?
Each "from" price above is the trip's lowest-priced date and room, so pick a date that shows that price on the tour page. Found the identical trip cheaper on another Australian booking site? Send us the link and we'll do our best to beat it (our Price Match Promise).
Are prices per person?
Yes, per person in AUD, the lowest price for each trip. Rooms, cabins and dates that cost more are priced on each tour page.
What is a working holiday arrival package?
A first week in Australia booked in one go: you're picked up at the airport, share a hostel dorm with a group of other new arrivals, and spend guided days getting to know the city. Some also help you get set up for work. It's for people who'd rather land with a plan and a group than sort the first week alone.
Do I need an arrival package for a Working Holiday visa?
No. It isn't part of the visa and you can set yourself up: apply for a Tax File Number online once you're in Australia (it's free), open a bank account, get a prepaid SIM and start applying for jobs. What a package buys you is a bed, a group of people and someone to ask during the first, most confusing week.
Do arrival packages help you find a job?
4 of the 5 we sell include a free Working Holiday starter pack and an optional one-on-one meeting on jobs and admin, plus the operator's job board and weekly jobs email (Melbourne Arrival Week; Sydney Arrival Week; Sydney Week + East Coast Semi-Guided Tour; Melbourne). No arrival package guarantees you a job. For your second-year visa, check that a job counts for your 88 days with our free postcode checker before you take it, and send us your CV for job matching.
Sydney or Melbourne: where should I land?
Both have the most jobs and the most hostels. Sydney is beaches and the harbour, and it's where most East Coast trips start, so it suits you if you'll head north towards Cairns. Melbourne is laneways, cafes and food, with the Great Ocean Road nearby. Neither city counts for 88-day work, so plan to head regional for that.
Can I do an arrival week and then the East Coast?
Yes. Sydney Week + East Coast Semi-Guided Tour, Sydney to Cairns (37 Days) (from $5,489) and Melbourne, Sydney + East Coast Tour, Melbourne to Cairns (44 Days) (from $6,289) start with the arrival week and carry on up the coast to Cairns in one booking.
