Location by location

Byron Bay, from $379

The Byron Bay Tandem Skydive 15,000ft (With Byron Bay Transfer) is the only jump over Cape Byron: up to 60 seconds of freefall with the lighthouse and the surf beaches underneath, from an exclusive self-contained drop zone. The price includes return transfers from your Byron accommodation, three months of APF (Australian Parachute Federation) membership, the compulsory personal accident insurance and a certificate. Video and photo packages are sold on the day.

Noosa, from $319

The Noosa Tandem 13,000ft Skydive (Weekend) comes with the catch in the title: it runs on weekends, and it’s a 13,000ft jump with up to 45 seconds of freefall rather than 60. Views run over Noosa and Coolum Beach. Three-month APF membership and a certificate are listed; video and photos are not included; transfers aren’t mentioned.

Cairns, from $349

Two options. The Cairns Tandem Skydive up to 15,000ft with Transfers from $349 is the full-height jump with reef and rainforest views on the climb, free return pick-ups from Cairns and surrounds, APF membership, insurance and a certificate. Photos and video are extra. The Cairns Tandem Skydive up to 14,000ft from $319 goes 1,000ft lower, still claims up to 60 seconds of freefall and a five-to-seven-minute canopy ride, adds an optional beach landing, and includes a free air-conditioned shuttle from Cairns city or your hotel. Choose on altitude versus the beach landing.

Mission Beach, from $379

The Mission Beach Tandem 15,000ft Skydive (With Cairns Transfer) is the classic Queensland beach landing: up to 60 seconds of freefall from 15,000ft over the coast, reef and rainforest, landing on the sand when the weather allows. Free Cairns return transfers, APF membership, insurance and a certificate are included. Video and photos are not. The extra over the Cairns jump buys the beach and the drive down the coast.

Airlie Beach and the Whitsundays, from $349

The Tandem Skydive with Beach Landing departs Airlie Beach with free transfers, gives up to 60 seconds of freefall and a 5–7 minute canopy ride over the Whitsunday Islands, and lands on Midge Point Beach when conditions allow. The listing doesn’t state the exit altitude, so ask if that matters to you.

Sydney (Wollongong), from $399

The Sydney Wollongong 15,000ft Tandem Skydive (With Transfer) from $399 is the one to book from Sydney: a beach skydive over Wollongong, an hour south, with transfers included, APF membership, a certificate and a $20 merch voucher. Video and photos are extra.

Great Ocean Road, from $399

The Great Ocean Road 15,000ft Tandem Skydive jumps from Connewarre, near Geelong, over the surf coast: up to 60 seconds of freefall, a beach skydive, APF membership and a certificate. Transfers aren’t listed; video and photos are extra.

Rottnest Island, from $489

The 10,000ft Rottnest Island Tandem Skydive is the lowest Australian jump here. You get a scenic flight over the whole island first, 30 seconds of freefall, a five-minute canopy ride and a beach landing at Salmon, Thomson or Bickley Bay, with a maximum of three jumpers per load. A 15,000ft upgrade is available. The ferry to and from the island, meals and accommodation are not included, and the weight limit is 95kg (up to 110–115kg at the instructor’s discretion).

Queenstown, New Zealand, from $466 (the comparison)

The Queenstown Tandem Skydive - 15,000ft gives up to 60 seconds of freefall; no transfers or extras are listed. On price, Cairns at the same height ($349) is cheaper than Queenstown ($466). New Zealand’s lower jumps are the 12,000ft Tandem Skydive at Taupo from $266 and the 10,000ft Tandem Skydive at Franz Josef from $279.

Price by altitude

Altitude buys freefall time: 10,000ft gives about 30 seconds, 14,000ft and above up to 60. Altitude isn’t the whole price story: Cairns at 15,000ft ($349) is cheaper than Rottnest at 10,000ft ($489). Rottnest’s price covers a scenic flight over the island, a beach landing and a plane that carries three. Location drives the price; altitude drives the experience.

Transfers: included or not

Drop zones are rarely in town, so this matters.

  • Included: Byron Bay (from your accommodation), both Cairns jumps (from the city or your hotel), Mission Beach (from Cairns), Airlie Beach, Wollongong.
  • Not listed: Noosa, Sydney (Wilton), Great Ocean Road (Connewarre), Queenstown. Assume you’re getting yourself there.
  • Excluded: the Rottnest ferry. The jump price starts once you’re on the island.

On the East Coast the alternative to an included transfer is a taxi to a paddock, so “with transfer” is worth more than it looks.

Extras: video, memberships, insurance, weight

Video and photos. Never included here. Sold separately at Byron (on the day), Noosa, the Cairns 15,000ft jump, Mission Beach, the Great Ocean Road, Wollongong and Rottnest. The only listing with a stated price is Franz Josef in New Zealand: instructor camera NZ$199, personal photographer NZ$299, both NZ$449. Expect to pay for footage; expect to want it.

APF membership and insurance. A three-month Australian Parachute Federation membership, compulsory personal accident insurance and a certificate are included at Byron Bay, Cairns (15,000ft) and Mission Beach. APF membership and a certificate are listed at the Great Ocean Road and Wollongong, which adds a $20 merch voucher.

Weight limits. Rottnest lists 95kg, with up to 110–115kg at the instructor’s discretion. The others don’t state one. Every drop zone has a limit, so ask if you’re near or over 95kg.

Weather. Beach landings are “when conditions allow” at Airlie Beach and “weather permitting” at Mission Beach. Skydiving is weather-dependent full stop, so don’t book it for the morning of your flight home.

Budget tips

  1. Cairns is the value jump: 15,000ft, transfers, APF, insurance and a certificate from $349. Nothing else in Australia on our site beats that for full height.
  2. Price the beach if you’ll want the beach. Cairns ($349) is cheaper than Mission Beach with its sand landing ($379). The Cairns 14,000ft jump from $319 offers an optional beach landing closer to Cairns.
  3. Noosa if a weekend and 13,000ft suit you. Up to 45 seconds of freefall against 60 at Cairns; on price, Noosa ($319) is cheaper than Cairns ($349).
  4. Add the video to your mental price. No Australian listing here states a video price, so ask at booking.
  5. Rottnest is a day, not a jump. Price the ferry and the island before committing to $489.
  6. Don’t fly to Queenstown just for the skydive. At 15,000ft, Cairns ($349) is cheaper than Queenstown ($466). Jump there because you’re there.

FAQs

What is the cheapest skydive in Australia? On our site right now: Noosa (13,000ft, weekends only) and Cairns (14,000ft), both $319. Cheapest 15,000ft jump: Cairns at $349.

How much is a skydive in Byron Bay? From $379 for the Byron Bay Tandem Skydive 15,000ft (With Byron Bay Transfer), including return accommodation transfers, APF membership, insurance and a certificate. Video and photos are extra, sold on the day.

Is 15,000ft worth it over 10,000ft or 12,000ft? The listings put 10,000ft at 30 seconds of freefall and 14,000–15,000ft at up to 60 seconds. If freefall is the point, go high. In Australia the full-height jumps are often no dearer than the low ones anyway.

Are transfers included? At Byron Bay, Cairns, Mission Beach (from Cairns), Airlie Beach and Wollongong, yes. Noosa, Wilton, the Great Ocean Road and Queenstown don’t list them. The Rottnest ferry is excluded.

Is the video included? No, on every listing here. Byron sells packages on the day; the rest say extra without a price, except Franz Josef in New Zealand (from NZ$199).

Which skydive has a beach landing? Mission Beach (weather permitting), Airlie Beach (conditions allowing), Wollongong, the Great Ocean Road, Rottnest Island, and optionally the Cairns 14,000ft jump.
