Overview

This is the Cairns skydive that lands down the coast, not on the edge of town. The dropzone sits at Mundoo near Innisfail, where the Wet Tropics rainforest meets the Coral Sea, so the climb to 14,000ft gives you reef, ranges and cane country out of the same window. Freefall hits speeds of up to 200km/h, then the canopy opens and you get five to seven minutes of quiet gliding with no glass in the way. If the conditions allow, pay the upgrade and land on the sand at Etty Bay or Kurrimine Beach.

The free air-conditioned shuttle leaves the Cairns CBD at 7am, with door-to-door hotel pick-ups available, or you drive yourself to the dropzone. At the skydiving centre your tandem master fits the harness and runs the safety briefing, you board, and the climb takes about 20 minutes. With three minutes to go the tandem master does the final checks. Then the door opens. After the canopy ride and landing, the shuttle brings you back to Cairns.

Allow around six hours door to door; it is sold as a half-day trip, and your booking time is a check-in time, not a jump time. No experience is needed, just basic fitness and good general health. Minimum age is 16, with written parent or guardian consent under 18, and there is no upper age limit. Maximum weight is 115kg, with a surcharge from 95kg paid on the day. Photo and video packages are extra and can be pre-booked or added at the dropzone.

Common questions about this trip

  • Where do I get picked up and when?

The free return shuttle departs the Cairns CBD at 7am, and door-to-door hotel pick-ups are available. The dropzone itself is at 30 Wilson Road, Mundoo, near Innisfail on the Cassowary Coast, and you can self-drive if you prefer. Your booking time is a check-in time, not a jump time.
  • How long does it take?

It is sold as a half-day trip, so allow around six hours from pick-up to drop-off. The operator aims to complete your skydive within three hours of your arrival at the dropzone, but weather and air traffic can stretch that. Don't book anything tight for the afternoon.
  • Are there age or weight limits?

Minimum age is 16, and anyone under 18 needs written consent from a parent or guardian. There is no upper age limit. The maximum weight is 115kg, and a surcharge applies from 95kg, paid on the day. Basic fitness and good general health are required.
  • What is the beach landing option?

For an extra fee you can land on the sand at Etty Bay or Kurrimine Beach instead of the dropzone. It is subject to conditions on the day. If the crew cannot land on the beach, you land at the park and the beach landing fee is refunded.
  • What happens if the weather is bad?

Skydiving is weather dependent and the operator decides on the day. If your jump is cancelled for weather, the crew will try to rebook you onto a suitable alternative date before you leave the dropzone. If that is not possible, your payment stays valid for three years from the original jump date, or you can take a refund.
  • Can I get photos and video?

Yes. There is a photos-only package and a video-and-photo package. Both can be pre-booked or bought on the day at the dropzone.
  • Is Cairns the nearest backpacker base?

Yes. Pick-up is from the Cairns CBD or your Cairns hotel, so a hostel in town is the easiest base. The dropzone is near Innisfail on the Cassowary Coast, and the transfer is the only way to get there without a car.
  • What's the cancellation policy?

Full refund with 48 hours notice. Cancelling within 48 hours costs $100 per person, and within 24 hours the skydive payment is forfeited. Bookings can be rescheduled any number of times, free with 48 hours notice and a $50 fee within 24 hours. If weather cancels a jump, the operator rebooks on another date, or payments stay valid for 3 years. Wanderlust handles the refund for you, refunds mirror the operator's terms 1:1 (including if the operator cancels) and we chase it on your behalf.
