Skydiving in Cairns

3 options · from $319 AUD

Skydiving in Cairns means falling out of a plane with the Great Barrier Reef on one side and World Heritage rainforest on the other, which is a lot of scenery to take in at around 200km/h. Tandem jumps need no experience: you are strapped to an instructor who does everything except the screaming.

There are three ways to do it: a 15,000ft jump over Cairns from $349, the famous beach-landing jump at Mission Beach from $379 with Cairns transfers included, or a 14,000ft jump from $319 with an optional beach landing.

What a tandem skydive in Cairns is actually like

You get picked up in Cairns, head to the drop zone, meet your tandem master, get fitted into a harness and sit through a short safety briefing. The plane climbs for around 20 minutes while the reef and rainforest spread out below.

Then the door opens. Freefall lasts up to 60 seconds at speeds up to 200km/h before the canopy opens and everything goes quiet: five to seven minutes of gliding over the coast, and your tandem master may let you steer. Landing is a slide onto your backside, on a field or, at Mission Beach, on the sand. The jump is over in minutes; the full outing takes three to six hours depending on the product.

Cairns vs Mission Beach: which skydive to book

The Cairns Tandem 15,000ft Skydive (With Transfer) from $349 is the quick one: a 3-hour outing from up to 15,000ft over Cairns with coastal views, free return pick-ups from Cairns and surrounds, a three-month Australian Parachute Federation membership, compulsory personal accident insurance and a certificate included. Photos and video are extra.

The Mission Beach Tandem 15,000ft Skydive (With Cairns Transfer) from $379 is Australia's classic beach skydive: the same 15,000ft and up to 60 seconds of freefall, but you land on the sand at Mission Beach, weather permitting, a couple of hours south of Cairns. Free return transfers, APF membership, insurance and a certificate are included, photos and video extra.

The Tandem Skydive up to 14,000ft from $319 comes with free air-conditioned transfers from Cairns City or your hotel and an optional beach landing, billed as the closest beach-landing skydive to Cairns. Up to 60 seconds of freefall, five to seven minutes under canopy, groups up to 18. Pick this if you want the beach-landing option without the drive south to Mission Beach.

Weather, weight limits and what to bring

Skydiving lives and dies by the weather. Low cloud or strong wind grounds the plane, and the Mission Beach sand landing is explicitly weather permitting, so book early in your Cairns stay and leave a spare day for a reschedule. Tandem operators run weight limits, so check at booking if you are a bigger build.

Wear clothes you can move in and closed shoes laced tight. Tie long hair back, leave jewellery at the hostel, skip the big night out before, and do not scuba dive within 24 hours of a jump.

Skydiving: your questions

How high is the Cairns skydive?

The Cairns jump and the Mission Beach jump both go to 15,000ft for up to 60 seconds of freefall. The third jump goes up to 14,000ft, also with up to 60 seconds of freefall, and offers an optional beach landing closer to Cairns.

Is the Mission Beach skydive worth it over Cairns?

On price, Cairns ($349) is cheaper than Mission Beach ($379). If you want the beach landing, Mission Beach from $379 lands on the sand, weather permitting, with Cairns transfers included. If you just want the jump, Cairns 15,000ft from $349 is done in about three hours.

Do I need any experience to skydive in Cairns?

No. All three are tandem jumps, harnessed to a qualified tandem master who handles the exit, the freefall and the landing. You get a ground briefing and a few instructions to follow in the air.

What happens if the weather cancels my skydive?

You get rescheduled to the next available slot, which is why you should book early in your stay and keep a day or two flexible, especially in the wet season from roughly November to April.
