How backpackers save on the reef

  • Compare the all-in price

A $10 fuel surcharge on the day, or a ferry-only fare with snorkel gear extra, can turn a cheap fare into an average one. Every pick above shows what's left to pay. What the reef really costs.

  • Inner reef or outer reef

Green Island is $189; an outer reef day is $269. The outer reef has clearer water, more coral and bigger fish. If the reef is the reason you came to Cairns, the outer reef is worth the extra. Snorkel, dive or liveaboard?

  • Book your intro dive with the trip

Some boats charge more for an intro dive added on the day (Dreamtime's is $119 booked ahead, $139 on the day). If you think you'll want one, add it when you book. Learning to dive.

  • Stay where the boats leave

Cairns boats leave from the Reef Fleet Terminal, a short walk from most city hostels, so you won't need a paid transfer. Port Douglas boats leave from the marina. Cairns vs Port Douglas vs Airlie Beach.

Reef snorkelling deals: your questions

What are the best Great Barrier Reef snorkelling deals right now?

Best overall outer-reef deal: Evolution Outer Reef Cruise (Down Under Cruise & Dive), $269. Cheapest reef day from Cairns: Green Island Eco Adventure + Boat Snorkel Trip, $189. Best cultural reef day: Dreamtime Dive & Snorkel (Snorkel Day), $249. Best under sail: Passions of Paradise Outer Reef Sail, $269. Most included: Reef Experience All-Inclusive Outer Reef Day, $279 (+$10 on the day). Best outer reef from Port Douglas: Silversonic Agincourt Reef Snorkel Cruise, $309 (+$10 on the day). Best half day: Low Isles Morning Snorkel Trip from Port Douglas, $239. Best if you're not a confident swimmer: Sunlover Moore Reef Pontoon Day, $299 (+$10 on the day). Sleep on the reef: OceanQuest 2 Night Liveaboard, $949. Biggest saving vs RRP: Cape Tribulation Reef Snorkel, Morning Tour, $199. Prices checked 28 October 2026.

What is the cheapest outer Great Barrier Reef snorkelling trip?

From Cairns, Dreamtime Dive & Snorkel (Snorkel Day) at $249 per person is the cheapest full-day outer reef snorkel trip we sell today, with snorkel gear and lunch included. If a half day is enough, Low Isles Morning Snorkel Trip from Port Douglas is $239. Cheaper "reef" trips usually go to Green Island or another inner-reef cay, which is closer and calmer but has less coral and fewer big fish.

Is Green Island a good cheap reef trip?

Green Island is the cheapest reef day from Cairns: Green Island Eco Adventure + Boat Snorkel Trip is $189 with the fast cat, snorkel gear or a glass-bottom boat tour, and a 1-hour boat trip to a snorkel site. Ferry-only tickets are cheaper, but you pay extra for gear on the island. It's an inner-reef coral cay with a beach and rainforest, so it's good for a relaxed day or weaker swimmers. For the best coral, pay for an outer reef trip (from $269).

How much is Dreamtime Dive & Snorkel?

The Dreamtime snorkel day is $249 per person with us today, including lunch, morning and afternoon tea, snorkel gear and a lycra suit. Intro and certified dives are optional extras. Prices like "from $157" or "from $165" on overseas booking sites are often in US or NZ dollars, not Australian dollars, so compare in AUD before you book.

Cairns or Port Douglas: where is the reef better?

Both reach the outer reef. Port Douglas boats get to Agincourt's ribbon reefs faster (Silversonic Agincourt Reef Snorkel Cruise, $309). Cairns has the most boats and the cheapest outer reef days (from $269), and most backpackers are already staying there. If you're staying in Cairns, the transfer to Port Douglas usually costs more than you'd save.

What costs extra on a reef trip?

Most boats collect a fuel surcharge on the day, usually $10 per adult. Intro and certified dives, guided snorkel tours, photos, bar drinks and hotel transfers are usually extra too. Each pick above shows its all-in price, and each tour page lists exactly what's included.

Can I snorkel the reef if I'm not a strong swimmer?

Yes. Boats provide flotation vests or noodles, and many have lifeguards watching the water. A pontoon day is the easiest: Sunlover Moore Reef Pontoon Day ($299) has a glass-bottom boat and a semi-sub, so you can see the coral without swimming at all.

Are these prices cheaper than booking with the operator?

12 of the 21 reef trips we sell are below the operator's own RRP and below every other Australian booking site we check, re-checked every day. If you find any of them cheaper, our Price Match Promise means we'll do our best to beat it.

When is the best time to snorkel the Great Barrier Reef?

June to October is the clearest and calmest, with no stingers. From November to May the water is warmer, and stinger suits (included on most boats above) protect you from jellyfish. Trips run all year.
