Overview

K'gari is the world's largest sand island, and the one place on Earth where rainforest grows straight out of sand. This day tour covers the icons properly: you cross on the ferry from Hervey Bay or Rainbow Beach, then a purpose-built 4WD coach and a local guide who knows the island's wildlife, history and Butchulla heritage take it from there.

Swim in Boorangoora (Lake McKenzie), the island's most photographed lake, all white silica sand and impossibly blue water. Float down Eli Creek, where around four million litres of fresh water an hour run into the Pacific. Cruise the 75 Mile Beach highway to the rusting Maheno shipwreck, beached by a cyclone in 1935, then stroll the Wanggoolba Creek boardwalk at Central Station among king ferns and towering flooded gums. Keep an eye out for dingoes, birds of prey and, from July to November, humpback whales offshore. Want it from above? An optional scenic flight can be added on the day, weather permitting, at extra cost.

Pick your departure: Rainbow Beach pickups run from 7:30 to 7:50am from a set list of stops, and Hervey Bay pickups are from your accommodation. Morning tea, lunch at a beachfront resort on the island, the return ferry and national park fees are included. Children under eight need a car seat (tell us when you book), and under-ones can't travel.
