Overview

Mammoth Cave is a natural time capsule, holding the fossil remains of long-extinct animals. The standout is a 50,000-year-old zygomaturus jawbone still embedded in the cave wall, from a giant wombat-like herbivore that once roamed the forests of Western Australia.

You go at your own pace with an audio guide, available in English, French, German, Malay and Mandarin. A gently sloping boardwalk and stairs take you through the vast chambers, past crystal formations, stalactites and stalagmites. When you come out, the walk carries on through the towering karri trees of Boranup Forest.

Allow about an hour. Wear comfortable shoes for the stairs, and bring a water bottle but no other food or drink. Leave backpacks in the car, and note that backpack baby carriers aren't allowed, though front-worn carriers are fine. Children must be with an adult.
