Overview

Manta rays gather in a channel off Mantaray Island in the Yasawas to feed, and this trip runs on select dates from May to October, chosen with the resort's team for the best chance of finding them. The catamaran leaves Port Denarau at 8.45am and cruises through the Mamanuca and Yasawa Islands, calling at resorts on the way, to land you on the island before midday.

After a briefing, tender boats take you out to swim and snorkel with the mantas as they glide through the channel. Buoyancy aids are there for less confident swimmers. Mantas keep their own schedule, so if they're not in the channel you do a guided snorkel on one of Fiji's most colourful reefs instead, with starfish, anemones, reef sharks, morays, octopus and butterflyfish. You can also come back on the next Manta Ray Experience for FJ$85 and try again.

Lunch at the resort is included with a soft drink and water, and you can use the resort's facilities until the boat collects you mid-afternoon. You're back at Port Denarau around 6pm. Return hotel coach and all snorkel gear are included.

Common questions about this trip

  • When does it run?

Only on select dates from 1 May to 31 October, when mantas are most likely in the channel, so the calendar only opens those months. Dates are confirmed on request: after you book we check your date with the operator and confirm it with you. If the trip isn't running that day, you can move to another date or take a full refund.
  • Are the mantas guaranteed?

No, they're wild animals. If they're not in the channel you do a guided reef snorkel instead, and you can rejoin the next Manta Ray Experience for FJ$85 per person.
  • Do I need to be a strong swimmer?

You should be comfortable in open water. Buoyancy aids are available for less confident swimmers. Children 5 to 15 can join at a child rate; under-5s can't.
  • Is there a fuel surcharge?

Yes. The ferry operator charges a fuel surcharge on this day trip, currently FJ$25 per adult and FJ$17.50 per child, paid at the check-in counter at Port Denarau in Fijian dollars.
  • How does the hotel pickup work?

The free coach runs from most Nadi, Denarau, Vuda and Wailoaloa hotels, and seats must be booked at least 24 hours ahead (we do it with your booking). Be at the pickup point 15 minutes early: drivers can't wait. Miss it and you'll need your own way to Port Denarau.
  • What's the cancellation policy?

Cancellation terms for this trip are set by the operator and confirmed on your booking voucher. Refunds mirror the operator's policy, if they can refund, so can we. Wanderlust handles the refund for you, refunds mirror the operator's terms 1:1 (including if the operator cancels) and we chase it on your behalf. Message us for the exact day-by-day terms before you book.
