Overview

South of Alice Springs the country opens into red sand, old cattle stations and rock that carries thousands of years of history. This half-day tour gets you out into it without an early start or a long day.

The first stop is the Ewaninga rock carvings, petroglyphs made by early Arrernte people. Then it's Ooraminna Station homestead for a look at outback station life, morning tea at the Wild Horse Bar, and the film set used for the outback drama The Drover's Boy. At the Old Ghan Museum you'll hear how the railway and the Centre's pioneers shaped the region.

The last stop is the Red Dune lookout, with views across the desert to the MacDonnell Ranges. It's easy going and takes about 4 hours 15 minutes, with pickup, morning tea and attraction entry fees included. The $10 national park fee is booked online before the tour.
