Overview

The Wanderer is the route for people who want to see the whole Yasawa chain without planning it. You stay at four resorts across three regions: one night in the Yasawa gateway region, two in the Blue Lagoon, two in the manta region, then two at a different gateway resort on the way back. The exact resort in each region depends on availability when you book, and you pick a dorm bed or a private room.

Each stop has activities built in. At Barefoot Kuata it's a reef-shark snorkel or a marine conservation session; at Octopus, a guided mountain hike, night snorkel or one of several snorkel trips depending on the day. In the Blue Lagoon you swim into the Sawa-i-Lau limestone caves. In manta country, from May to October, you swim with mantas when they're in the channel, or do a guided reef snorkel, plus a sunset tube ride, village visit or marine conservation tour depending on the resort. Both gateway resorts have a summit hike for sunset.

Return coach and every ferry leg are included, and so are a full-day Malamala Beach Club pass for before or after the trip and a welcome pack with a sulu, drink bottle and waterproof bag. Meals are on each resort's compulsory meal plan, paid on the island. The boat leaves Port Denarau at 8.45am daily.

Itinerary at a glance

1 Day 1 · Port Denarau to the Yasawa gateway

The 8.45am catamaran runs through the Mamanucas to the first Yasawa resort, Barefoot Kuata or Octopus, by mid-morning. Settle in, then your included activity: the reef-shark snorkel at Kuata, or a guided mountain hike or night snorkel at Octopus, depending on the day.

Accommodation
Barefoot Kuata or Octopus Resort
2 Days 2 to 3 · The Blue Lagoon

Board the northbound boat between 10.30 and 11am for the top of the chain and two nights in the Blue Lagoon. Day two is free on the lagoon. On day three you visit the Sawa-i-Lau caves, where a short swim under the rock takes you into a hidden cavern. The caves don't open on Sundays.

Accommodation
Blue Lagoon Beach Resort, Nanuya Island Resort or Boathouse Nanuya
4 Days 4 to 5 · Manta country

A morning on the lagoon, then the southbound boat in the early afternoon to the manta region. On day five, from May to October, swim with manta rays if they're in the channel; otherwise it's a guided snorkel at one of the region's best reefs. Each resort adds its own included activity: a sunset tube cruise or village visit at Mantaray, a marine conservation tour at Barefoot Manta, or a sunset ridge hike, sunset tubing or beach-to-beach hike at Mai Sunset.

Accommodation
Mai Sunset Beach Resort, Mantaray Island Resort or Barefoot Manta
6 Days 6 to 7 · Back to the gateway

A slow morning, then the mid-afternoon boat south to the gateway region, this time to the resort you didn't stay at on night one, with its included activities. Both have a summit hike, and sunset from the top is the photo of the trip.

Accommodation
Barefoot Kuata or Octopus Resort
8 Day 8 · Back to Port Denarau

One more day on the island before the late-afternoon boat, back at Port Denarau at about 6pm, and the coach to your Nadi, Denarau or Wailoaloa hotel.

Common questions about this trip

  • Do I pick the resorts?

You pick dorm or private and the region order is fixed. The resort in each region is allocated by availability when your booking is confirmed. The route can also run in the opposite direction if that suits availability.
  • Are the mantas guaranteed?

No. The manta swim runs from May to October when the mantas are in the channel. Outside the season, or if they don't show, you do a guided reef snorkel instead.
  • Are meals included?

No. Every resort runs a compulsory meal plan, paid on the island in Fijian dollars, since the resorts are the only places to eat. It starts with lunch on arrival and ends with breakfast on the day you leave. Bring a card; there are no banks on the islands.
  • What's the Malamala bonus?

A full-day pass to Malamala Beach Club, an island beach club in the Mamanucas about 30 minutes from Port Denarau, with transfers. Use it the day before or after the Wanderer and book it ahead; it isn't refunded if you don't use it.
  • Is there a fuel surcharge?

Yes. The ferry operator sets it monthly, currently FJ$20 per person, and it's paid locally before you board rather than included in this price. Budget for it in Fijian dollars.
  • How is the booking confirmed?

Island beds are confirmed on request, and we come back to you within 48 hours. If your dates can't be confirmed, you don't pay for it.
  • What's the cancellation policy?

For Welcome and Departure Packs, there is no fee 31 or more days out, 50% from 15 to 30 days, and full charge at 14 days or less. For packages and island stays, the deposit is non-refundable 81 or more days out, the higher of 10% or the deposit applies from 46 to 80 days, and 100% applies at 45 days or less. Date changes up to 80 days out have no amendment fee. The operator can cancel vessel departures or vary itineraries for adverse conditions. Wanderlust handles the refund for you, refunds mirror the operator's terms 1:1 (including if the operator cancels) and we chase it on your behalf.
