Overview

You walk up the Mossman River towing a lightweight river sled along the sandy riverbed, with time for a swim while your guide explains the river and the life it supports. Then you lie on the sled and float back through a hidden creek and onto the main river, through calm, shady pools and faster runs.

Pick-up and drop-off from Port Douglas and Mossman are free, and the whole trip takes about 3.5 hours return. A wetsuit and boots (or a thermal top), the sled, safety gear, photos and snacks are provided.

You need a reasonable level of fitness and a high level of mobility. When the river is low, most of the year, it suits ages 4 and up; when it is higher it is only suitable for strong swimmers aged 15 and over. Everyone completes a medical questionnaire and release form, and the maximum weight is 120kg.

"Really great experience. We had visited Mossman Gorge the day before and this was really different. More an immersive river rainforest experience. Our teens loved it and the pace was good for a family. It was nice to slow down in the rainforest and see details that you may not have noticed."
