Whitsundays Day Trips from Airlie Beach

5 options · from $99 AUD

Whitsundays day trips from Airlie Beach are the answer when you want Whitehaven Beach, a snorkel and a proper sail without committing to two nights on a boat. You board in the morning, see the headline stuff, and you're back on the Airlie foreshore for sunset.

The short version: a sail for the classic day on the water, the speed boat for Hill Inlet and more sand time, the jet boat or jetski if you've got a spare couple of hours.

What a Whitsundays day trip is actually like

The full-day boats leave Airlie Beach between 9am and 10am and get back between 5pm and 6:30pm. On most it's out through the islands, a swim at Whitehaven on that squeaky silica sand, one or two snorkel stops over fringing reef, lunch on board, then the run home. On the sailing boats you can grab a rope or just lie on deck. The speed boat covers more water in less time, which is how it fits Hill Inlet and Whitehaven into one day.

The quick hits are different beasts. The jet boat is thirty minutes of spins and power stops around Pioneer Bay, turtles and dugongs between stunts. The jetski tour is 90 minutes on your own Sea-Doo along the coastline, guide up front, done in two and a half hours.

Which Whitsundays day trip is right for you

Whitsundays Day Sail, Langford Sandbar & Snorkel, from $199. The quieter-side sail, not Whitehaven: a fringing-reef snorkel, lunch on deck, then about two hours on the Langford Island sandbar snorkelling with the resident turtles, with an optional bushwalk, and a sunset sail home around 6 to 6:30pm. Morning tea, lunch, afternoon snacks, snorkel gear and stinger suits included; alcohol is BYO (no glass). Ages 12+, max 30.

Whitsundays Speed Boat Day Tour, Whitehaven Express, from $249. A fast, stable catamaran that does the Hill Inlet bushwalk to the lookout, Whitehaven Beach and two snorkel stops, 9am to about 5pm from Coral Sea Marina. Morning tea, lunch and afternoon tea included, BYO cans, free bus transfers. Best if you want the swirling-sand view and the most ground covered in one day.

Camira Sailing Adventure departing Port of Airlie, from $269. An 85-foot ocean-going sailing catamaran with the guided Hill Inlet lookout walk (tide permitting), Whitehaven, a fringing-reef snorkel, lunch and beer and wine from 10am. Nearly ten hours out of Port of Airlie; the bus transfer to the port is booked separately. The relaxed, well-fed option.

Airlie Beach 'Ultimate Blast' Jet Boat Ride, from $99. Thirty minutes on an 800-horsepower jet boat out of Coral Sea Marina, free GoPro photos after. A short, sharp hit of speed. Skip it if you're pregnant or have back, neck or heart issues.

Airlie Adventure Jetski Tour, from $249. Your own Sea-Doo, max 12 riders, no licence or experience needed, all gear and free photos, plus a courtesy bus around Airlie. Humpback whales are possible from July to September.

Practical tips for Airlie Beach day trips

May to September is dry season: calm water, clear days and no stingers. Stinger season runs roughly November to May, and the day boats carry stinger suits, so you still get in the water. Pack reef-safe sunscreen, a hat, a towel, swimmers under your clothes and motion-sickness tablets if you're prone. Whitehaven has little shade, so cover up. Book a few days ahead in peak season, and don't plan a bus out of Airlie on the evening of a full-day trip.

Day trips: your questions

Can you see Whitehaven Beach in one day from Airlie Beach?

Yes. The speed boat from $249 and the Camira sail from $269 both land you on Whitehaven and include the Hill Inlet lookout walk (tide permitting on Camira), back in Airlie the same day. The day sail from $199 goes to the Langford Island sandbar instead, not Whitehaven.

Day sail or speed boat: which is better?

Speed boat if the Hill Inlet view and maximum time on the sand matter most. Day sail if you want the sailing itself, all-day catering and a slower pace. Want a bar open from 10am and lunch on board? Camira from $269 has both on an 85-foot sailing catamaran, with the Hill Inlet lookout walk thrown in, tide permitting.

Do I need to be a strong swimmer to snorkel in the Whitsundays?

You need to be comfortable in the water, but the day boats provide snorkel gear and stinger suits, which add buoyancy, and the crew supervise the snorkel stops. You can also stay on board or on the beach.

Is a day trip worth it if I'm also doing an overnight sail?

The full-day boats cover similar ground to the overnight sails, so most people pick one or the other. The jet boat from $99 and the jetski tour from $249 are the better add-ons: short, different, and easy to slot in before or after your sail.
