Solo female travel in Australia, planned for comfort, safety and adventure.
Short answer: Wanderlust Travel & Adventure specialises in solo female trips around Australia, mostly the East Coast from Melbourne or Sydney to Cairns. We plan for comfort, safety and adventure: every bed is booked before you arrive, in a hostel rated at least 7.0 on Hostelworld (we pick 9.0+ first), in a female-only dorm when you ask for one or a private room if you'd rather. The big adventures (K'gari 4WD, Whitsundays sailing, the Great Barrier Reef) are guided group trips, so you're travelling solo but never doing the big days alone. A 30-day Melbourne to Cairns trip with hostels, the bus pass and the big adventures is from $4,199 per person. Trip planning is free.
Prices per person in AUD, checked 29 October 2026.
How we plan a trip for a woman travelling solo
Comfort
- Female-only dorms when you ask, or private rooms if you'd rather have your own space.
- Hostels rated 7.0+ on Hostelworld, and we choose 9.0+ first, even when a lower-rated one is cheaper.
- On K'gari, a camp with hot showers and flushing toilets is an option (Pippies, ages 18 to 35).
- Beds, buses and the big trips booked in the right order, so you're not planning every night on the road.
Safety
- Every bed booked before you arrive. No turning up late looking for a room.
- If female-only dorms are full somewhere, we tell you on the plan and offer a private room. Never a quiet swap.
- Guided group trips for K'gari, the Whitsundays and the reef, run by licensed operators. We show their public ratings where they have them.
- Help on WhatsApp or email while you travel, plus reminders the day before each guided trip on Travel Mates.
Adventure
- Drive a 4WD down K'gari's beach highway and swim in Lake McKenzie.
- Sleep on a boat in the Whitsundays and wake up off Whitehaven Beach.
- Snorkel the Great Barrier Reef, surf in Byron, skydive over the coast.
- Solo travel, mates along the way: you meet people on every guided day.

Questions: solo female travel in Australia
Is the East Coast of Australia safe for solo female travellers?
Yes, it's one of the most travelled backpacker routes in the world, and a lot of the people on it are women travelling solo. The usual city sense applies. Book your beds before you arrive so you're never hunting for a room at night, pick well-rated hostels, swim between the red and yellow flags, and in the tropical north (roughly the Whitsundays up) wear the stinger suit the boat gives you from about November to May. Emergency number: 000.
Do you book female-only dorms?
Yes. Tick "Female-only dorm" on the plan form and we book female-only dorms in hostels rated 7.0+ on Hostelworld, choosing 9.0+ first. If every rated female-only dorm in a town is full on your dates, we don't swap you quietly: the plan says so for that stop and offers a private room instead. On a Travel Mates trip, add "female-only dorms" in the notes at checkout and we'll book them wherever the hostel has them.
Can I have private rooms instead of dorms?
Yes. Choose "Private room" on the plan form and we price private rooms in the hostels instead. K'gari has no private rooms (everyone camps or shares), and a private cabin on a Whitsundays boat is possible but costs a lot more, so we quote that on request.
How much does a solo East Coast trip cost?
Our 30-day Melbourne to Cairns Travel Mates trip is $4,199 per person most of the year, $4,909 in high season (April, September, November) and $5,379 in December and January. That includes 22 hostel nights, the hop-on hop-off bus pass, K'gari, a 2-night Whitsundays sail, a reef day and 13 meals. Flights and most meals are extra.
Will I meet people if I travel on my own?
Yes. Every guided day (K'gari, the Whitsundays sail, the reef) runs with other backpackers, and the hostels on the route are full of people doing the same trip. Travel Mates is built around that: solo travel, mates along the way. There's no tour leader and no group that travels together the whole way, so you keep your own pace.
Can I start in Melbourne instead of Sydney?
Yes. The Melbourne to Cairns trip starts with two days in Melbourne and the Great Ocean Road, then an overnight coach to Sydney. If you'd rather skip overnight coaches, ask and we'll plan day coaches or a short flight instead.
Is Wanderlust a women-only tour company?
No. We're an Australian travel agency based in Byron Bay, and the tours we book are mixed groups run by licensed operators. What we specialise in is how we plan and book a trip for a woman travelling solo: female-only dorms or private rooms, rated hostels, beds booked before you arrive, and guided trips for the big adventures.
What happens if something goes wrong on the trip?
Message us on WhatsApp or email and we sort it with the operator or hostel. On Travel Mates trips you also get a trip pack with every booking, time and contact before you go, and a reminder the day before each guided trip.
