Overview

Abseiling is a simple proposition: clip in, lean back, trust the rope, and step off the edge. Do it off the 40 to 50 metre cliffs of Mount Tinbeerwah as the light goes gold over the Noosa hinterland and it stops being a stunt and becomes something you'll be quietly smug about for weeks. The mountain is a 265-metre volcanic plug in Tewantin National Park, 15 minutes from Hastings Street, with 360-degree views that take in the coast, the lakes and, on a clear day, the Glass House Mountains.

The session starts in the Mount Tinbeerwah car park at the end of Tinbeerwah Road, within an hour either side of 3pm depending on when the sun sets. From there it's a short walk along the paved path to the cliff. The guides run through the history of the mountain, then the briefing: harness, helmet, how the rope and the brake work, and your first descent on the rope with an instructor beside you. After that it's unlimited descents for up to two hours, each one a little less terrifying and a little more fun, until the sun drops and everyone sits on the rock to watch it go.

Three hours all up, no experience needed, all gear and training included. Minimum age is seven. Wear enclosed shoes and snug active wear (no skirts, short shorts, loose or midriff clothing) and bring water, a hat and sunscreen. Sessions run in rain but not storms; the operator postpones for storms or extreme heat. Bring your own picnic and a drink for the sunset. You make your own way to the car park.

Common questions about this trip

  • Where do I meet and how do I get there?

Sessions begin in the Mount Tinbeerwah car park at the end of Tinbeerwah Road, in Tewantin National Park, about 15 minutes' drive from Hastings Street in Noosa Heads. Transport isn't included, so you need a car, a lift or a rideshare. Your start time is on your booking; sessions start within an hour either side of 3pm depending on sunset.
  • What should I wear and bring?

Enclosed shoes (sneakers are fine), snug active wear with long hair tied up, and nothing loose, midriff-baring, skirts or short shorts. Wear clothes you don't mind getting a little scuffed on the rock. Bring a water bottle, hat, sunscreen and a camera, and a picnic and a drink for the sunset at the end.
  • I've never abseiled. Is that a problem?

No. All gear and training are included and no experience is necessary. The guides run a full briefing before anyone goes near the edge and instructors are on the ropes for every descent.
  • Is there an age limit or medical restriction?

Minimum age is seven. The operator doesn't recommend it for anyone with severe asthma, epilepsy, a cardio or respiratory disorder, hypertension, or skeletal, joint or ligament problems, and nobody under the influence of drugs or alcohol can take part.
  • What happens if it rains?

Sessions run in varying levels of rain, but not in storms. The operator postpones or cancels for storms or extreme heat and rebooks you onto another session.
  • How fit do I need to be?

Average fitness is plenty. The walk from the car park to the cliff is short and paved, and abseiling is more about nerve and technique than strength. The operator publishes no hard weight limit but notes harness pressure is an issue for very large bodies, so ask us if you're unsure.
  • Are there toilets?

Yes, there are national park toilets at the Mount Tinbeerwah day-use area, but no drinking water, so bring your own.
  • What's the cancellation policy?

Cancel 8 or more days before the tour for a full refund or reschedule. From 3 to 6 days before you get a 70% refund or can substitute another participant. Within 48 hours there is no refund, though you can substitute participants. If the operator cancels, usually for weather, it offers a full refund or a reschedule. Wanderlust handles the refund for you, refunds mirror the operator's terms 1:1 (including if the operator cancels) and we chase it on your behalf.
