The Wanderlust crew · Updated · 5 min read

Short answer: the Dingo’s K’gari Adventures 3-day 4WD tag-along from Rainbow Beach costs $579 per person. That covers a guide, the 4WD you drive in convoy, two nights at an enclosed beach campsite with tent, mat, sleeping bag and pillow, every meal on the island, all camping, national park and vehicle permits, the return ferry, fuel and luggage storage in Rainbow Beach. The only extra is the optional vehicle damage liability reduction. The 2-day version is $499.

Prices are per person in AUD, from our current listings (October 2026), and can change. The 3-day tour page shows the price for your date before you pay.

What the price includes

  • A knowledgeable, experienced tour guide leading the convoy
  • Two nights in an enclosed campsite on K’gari, metres from the beach
  • Fresh, healthy meals for the whole tour, with dietary requirements catered for with advance notice
  • Camping equipment: twin-share tent, camp mat, sleeping bag and pillow
  • A large undercover camp area with music and kitchen facilities, plus power to charge your phone
  • All camping, national park and vehicle permits
  • Return ferry transfers and fuel for the 4WDs
  • Luggage storage in Rainbow Beach
  • A multilingual audio guide via mobile app, so you can follow the tour in your own language

The tour takes up to 34 people. It is pitched at 18 to 39-year-olds.

What is extra

One line: optional vehicle damage liability reduction. If you drive, you carry a liability excess for damage to the 4WD, and you can pay to reduce it. The 2-day tour lists the options as no cover (100% liability) unless you pay to bring the excess down; the figures are on the tour page.

Morning tea on day one at Eurong Beach Resort is at your own cost.

How the three days run

Day 1: Rainbow Beach to Lake McKenzie. A compulsory 7am briefing at the Rainbow Beach meeting point: you are placed into vehicle groups, luggage storage is sorted and you learn to drive safely on sand. Depart around 9:30am for the ten-minute drive to the barge and the ten-minute crossing. Then an hour along 75 Mile Beach, the island’s highway (speed limits apply), to Eurong Beach Resort for morning tea, and on to Lake McKenzie for lunch, a swim and time to relax. Up the beach to camp around 3pm for an early dinner.

Day 2: Eli Creek, the Maheno and Champagne Pools. A quick breakfast, then Eli Creek for a swim. North to the Maheno shipwreck for photos and its history, then Indian Head, the island’s highest point, and a dip at Champagne Pools. Lunch is at the Maheno or Champagne Pools depending on time and conditions, then back to camp for dinner.

Day 3: Lake Wabby and back to Rainbow Beach. Breakfast, pack down camp, then drive to the start of the Lake Wabby walk and hike through the dunes to the lake. Lunch, then the drive down the beach to the barge. Back on the mainland you unpack and give the 4WDs a quick clean at the shed, and you are at the Rainbow Beach meeting point between 3pm and 4pm.

Itineraries can change with tides and weather.

Driving the 4WD

It is a tag-along: the guide drives the lead vehicle and you drive yours in convoy behind it, after the sand-driving briefing on the morning of day one. Fuel, the ferry and vehicle permits are in the price. If you would rather not drive, you ride as a passenger in the convoy. The liability reduction above only matters if you take the wheel.

The 2-day version

The K’gari 2-Day 4WD Tag-Along from Rainbow Beach is $499, with the same guide, camp, camping gear, meals, permits, ferry, fuel, luggage storage and audio guide. Groups run from 8 to 16 people. The route is the eastern beach icons compressed into two days:

  • Day 1: the 7am briefing, then north along the eastern beach with morning tea at a freshwater creek, the Maheno shipwreck and its history as a wartime hospital ship, lunch, and a swim at Eli Creek before camp. Meals: lunch, dinner.
  • Day 2: breakfast, then south to Eurong and inland to the rainforest at Central Station, a walk beside Wanggoolba Creek and the 1.8km rainforest walk to Pile Valley, then Boorangoora (Lake McKenzie) for a swim before lunch and the drive back to the barge at Inskip Point. Back in Rainbow Beach between 3:30pm and 4:30pm. Meals: breakfast, lunch.

Against the 3-day you give up Lake Wabby, Indian Head, Champagne Pools and the second night at camp, and keep Lake McKenzie, Eli Creek and the Maheno. The 2-day adds the Central Station rainforest walk, which the 3-day itinerary does not list. The price step between the two is on the K’gari tours by price list, and our K’gari tour cost guide sets both against every other tour on the island.

Getting to Rainbow Beach

The tour starts and ends at the Rainbow Beach meeting point, and the briefing is at 7am, so you need a bed in Rainbow Beach the night before. Rainbow Beach is on the East Coast bus route; our Hervey Bay vs Rainbow Beach guide covers which side of the island to start from. Doing the Whitsundays next? The K’gari + Whitsundays Combo from $1,499 pre-books a 3-day K’gari tag-along, the overnight bus north, a night in Airlie Beach and a 2-night sail.
