    Never dearer than direct

  • ⚡

    Compare in one shot

We check the big brands for your dates, so you don't have to open a tab for each one.

  • 📞

    Pre-trip support

  • 🛡️

    Insurance demystified

We explain which excess-reduction options are actually worth paying for.

Book the trips, not just the transport

Van + the tours that sell out

Self-drive the coast, but let us pre-book the guided adventures the van can't do — K'gari 4WD, the Whitsundays under sail, the Great Barrier Reef. Add any of them to your own trip.

Driving the coast?

Book the adventures before you pick up the keys.

A van gets you there, but K'gari 4WD tours, Whitsundays sails and the reef still sell out in peak season. Lock the big days in around your drive.

How to get a cheaper campervan

What actually moves the price, from the quotes we run every week.

  1. 1

Compare the total, not the daily rate

One-way fees, compulsory fees and cover can add hundreds to a cheap-looking daily rate. Every price in our results is the total for your dates with the required fees and basic cover in.

  2. 2

Pick the smallest van that fits

Check how many it sleeps, not just how many seats it has. A 2-berth for two is cheaper to hire and to fuel than a 4-berth you don't need.

  3. 3

Go longer, or be flexible on dates

Longer hires usually cost less per day, and prices move a lot by season. Shift your pick-up by a few days and compare the per-day price on each van.

  4. 4

Book early for summer and holidays

December, January and school holidays fill first, and the cheapest vans go early. Lock one in sooner and you have more choice.

  5. 5

    Check the depot is open

Some depots close on certain days. Britz, Maui, Mighty and Apollo's Cairns branch, for example, is closed on Sundays from October to March.

  6. 6

    Sleep free or cheap

Rest areas, council camps and national park sites cost far less than a powered site. The rules vary by state, so use our free camping guides.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Do I need a special licence to drive a campervan in Australia or NZ? ▾

No special licence required. A valid full driver's licence from your home country is enough. If it's not in English you'll also need an International Driving Permit (IDP) or certified translation. Most rentals are car-licence-friendly even for the bigger motorhomes.

Who is a campervan trip suited to? ▾

Anyone from first-time backpackers to gap-year couples to families wanting a cheaper Aussie road-trip. You don't need to be a hardcore camper, modern campervans cook, sleep and store gear for you.

Is travelling in a campervan expensive? ▾

Cheaper than you'd think. A campervan rolls sleeping, transport and cooking into one. For 2+ travellers it usually beats bus + hostel + restaurants once you're 5+ days into a trip.

Can I pick up in one city and drop off in another? ▾

Yes, one-way hires are common. Sydney → Cairns is the classic East Coast run. One-way fees apply and vary by season, we tell you upfront in the quote.

I'm travelling solo, is a campervan worth it? ▾

Honest answer: it's pricier solo. If meeting people matters, bus passes + hostels are usually more social. If freedom and remote nature is the priority, a small campervan can still work solo. And who knows, you might meet a friend along the way to share the journey (and the fuel).

What insurance comes with the rental? ▾

Basic cover is included in every price we show. It comes with an excess, the most you'd pay if the van is damaged, and usually a bond held on your card. Every company sells extra cover that lowers the excess, often to $0, for a daily fee. It's worth a look on long trips and remote roads.

Is free camping allowed in Australia? ▾

In places, and the rules change state by state and council by council. In Queensland a campervan can stop at a state rest area for up to 20 hours unless a sign says otherwise, but sleeping in a vehicle on a Brisbane street is illegal. Main Roads WA lists 63 rest areas where you can stay overnight for up to 24 hours. In NSW, Transport for NSW says rest areas aren't for camping. Many national parks have cheap campsites you book ahead. Always follow the sign at the spot: our free camping guides list the rules and the official places, state by state.

Can I freedom camp in New Zealand in a hire van? ▾

Only in a van certified self-contained, unless a site is set up for non-self-contained vehicles. Since 7 June 2026 only vehicles with a green warrant count as self-contained, and the van needs a toilet fixed inside it (a portable one no longer counts). If freedom camping matters to you, check the van displays a current green warrant before you drive off.

Do campervans come with unlimited kilometres? ▾

Many standard campervans do, but not every van and not every route. Our results tick "Unlimited km" only where the rental company's own page says so, and any daily cap or extra charge shows in that van's terms before you book.

Do I have to pay a bond? ▾

With the basic cover that's in every price we show, most companies hold a refundable bond on your card at pick-up and release it after you return the van. Each van shows its bond, and the compare view lines them up. Most companies also sell cover that lowers the bond to $0 for a daily fee; we show that price too, so you can pick either.

Which campervans have a shower and toilet? ▾

Usually the bigger vans and motorhomes. Tick the Toilet or Shower filter in your results, or set "Shower & toilet: Must have" before you search. Some vans have a toilet but no shower, and the tick list on each van says which.

How do I book? ▾

Search above: live prices for your dates in about 20 seconds, no sign-up needed. Pick a van and pay on our own secure checkout, never a third-party site, and we book it with the rental company. Some vans lock in with a small payment today and the balance goes to the company before pick-up; the van shows which.

Can I change my dates after booking? ▾

Date changes and cancellations follow the rental operator's own terms, which we send with your quote before you book. Higher-priced periods may have a price difference. We help you reschedule, no fee from us.

How does booking with Wanderlust save me money? ▾

We price every van under the rental company's own price for the same van and dates, with the required fees and basic cover in, so you're comparing like for like. And we check the companies for you in one search. Seen it cheaper somewhere? Send it over and we'll do our best to beat it.

Can I hire if I'm under 21? ▾

Some operators rent to 18+ for compact campers. Bigger motorhomes usually need 21+ or 25+. Tell us your age in the quote, we'll only suggest operators that fit.

Do you charge a booking fee? ▾

No. Our quoting service is free for you. We're paid a small commission by the operator when you book, so we work hard to find the right trip, but you never pay extra for it.
