Lake Matheson sits in ancient forest, and its dark water makes one of the best mirrors in New Zealand: in the early evening it reflects Aoraki/Mt Cook and Mt Tasman, the country's two highest mountains.

A local guide walks you around the lake through ancient rainforest, explaining its geology and glaciation, along with the plants, birds and natural history. The track is well-formed and easy, suited to all ages and abilities.

For the best chance of reflections the walk goes in the early evening, so check departure times with the operator, as they shift with daylight saving. Pickup and drop-off from your accommodation are included, along with raincoats, over-trousers, big umbrellas, walking poles, sunscreen, and hot drinks with biscuits.
