Réponse courte : Kangaroo Island is reached by a SeaLink ferry from Cape Jervis to Penneshaw, a crossing of about 45 minutes, or by a flight of around 30 minutes from Adelaide to Kingscote. You can do the highlights in one very long day from Adelaide, but two or three days is a far better fit, and you do not need to hire a car if you go on a guided trip. The big sights are Seal Bay’s wild sea lions, Remarkable Rocks and Admirals Arch in Flinders Chase National Park, and koalas and kangaroos.
Facts below were checked on 27 October 2026 against SeaLink, the National Parks and Wildlife Service South Australia (parks.sa.gov.au), PIRSA (Primary Industries and Regions SA), the South Australian Department for Environment and Water and the South Australian Tourism Commission. Fees, timetables and rules change, so confirm before you travel.
Questions: getting there
How do you get to Kangaroo Island?
By ferry or by air. SeaLink runs a vehicle and passenger ferry between Cape Jervis and Penneshaw daily (except Christmas Day), and the crossing is about 45 minutes. Cape Jervis is about two hours south of Adelaide. The alternative is a flight of roughly 30 minutes from Adelaide to Kingscote.
How much is the Kangaroo Island ferry?
SeaLink sets the fare by passenger type and by whether you bring a vehicle, and it changes, so check the current table on the SeaLink Kangaroo Island site. We have not quoted a figure because the vehicle and passenger rates differ and SeaLink revises them. If you book one of our Kangaroo Island trips, the return ferry is already included.
Do you need to book the Kangaroo Island ferry in advance?
Yes, book ahead, particularly if you are taking a vehicle or travelling in school holidays. SeaLink runs up to 12 sailings a day each way in peak periods, but popular times fill. Tours that include the ferry book it for you.
Can you do Kangaroo Island as a day trip from Adelaide?
Yes, but it is a very long day. Our Kangaroo Island day trip from Adelaide is a coach and ferry day of around 16 hours door to door, from 259 €. It covers a guided beach walk at Seal Bay, lunch, Remarkable Rocks and Admirals Arch, and the Kangaroo Island Wildlife Park, with hotel pickup and set-down.
Is a day trip to Kangaroo Island worth it?
Yes if you only have one day and you want the icons: sea lions, the rocks and koalas. No if you want time to walk, swim or watch wildlife at dusk, because the ferry, driving and tour stops fill the day. If you can spare one night, the two-day trip below feels much less rushed.
How many days do you need on Kangaroo Island?
Two days is the practical minimum for a relaxed look, and three days lets you add beaches, the east of the island and an evening or morning for wildlife. A single day covers only the main western stops. Our 2-day wildlife adventure with a bell tent stay coûte dès 569 €, et le 3-day Untamed Escapes trip with swag camping coûte dès 669 €.
Do you need a car on Kangaroo Island?
No, not if you join a tour. The island is large, so the sights are spread out and public transport is limited, which is why most visitors without a vehicle book a guided trip or hire a car. Both our multi-day trips include a guide and a coach, with the ferry sorted. If you are already on the island, our Day Tour from Kingscote coûte dès 159 € and does not include the ferry.
Questions: cost and tours
Why is Kangaroo Island so expensive?
Because everything crosses water. The island is reached only by ferry or plane, and the ferry is the sole vehicle link, so tours pay for the crossing, the coach and a small-group guide as well as the activities. Prices also reflect remote accommodation and the cost of running trips on a large island. Our trips bundle the ferry, so the price you see covers most of the big costs.
What are the best Kangaroo Island tours from Adelaide?
Pick by time. For one day, the SeaLink-operated day trip coûte dès 259 €. For two days, the Groovy Grape Barossa 2-day bell tent trip coûte dès 569 €, with a night at Camp Groovy. For three days, the Untamed Escapes swag camping trip coûte dès 669 €. The cheapest of these is the day trip at 259 €.
Questions: wildlife and sights
What wildlife can you see on Kangaroo Island?
Sea lions, koalas, kangaroos, wallabies, echidnas and New Zealand fur seals, plus a lot of birdlife. Seal Bay is the best place to see wild Australian sea lions hauled out on the sand, and the Kangaroo Island Wildlife Park is a reliable place to see koalas and kangaroos. Wildlife is wild, so sightings are never guaranteed, but the guided stops are chosen to improve your chances.
Where can you see sea lions on Kangaroo Island?
At Seal Bay Conservation Park, on the south coast. Visits are on a guided basis: our day trips include a guided beach walk, and the 3-day trip includes a 45-minute ranger-led tour. Australian sea lions are an endangered species, so you keep your distance and follow the ranger.
What are Remarkable Rocks and Admirals Arch?
They are two of the island’s best-known sights, both in Flinders Chase National Park on the western end. Remarkable Rocks is a cluster of giant weathered granite boulders on a coastal dome, and Admirals Arch is a natural rock arch where New Zealand fur seals are often seen. Every tour listed above includes them.
Do you need a park pass for Kangaroo Island?
Yes, for the national park sights, unless your tour includes the fees. The National Parks and Wildlife Service South Australia sells a Kangaroo Island Tour Pass for 69 € per adult (checked Oct 2026), valid for 12 months, covering Flinders Chase National Park, the Seal Bay guided tour, Cape Borda Lightstation, Cape Willoughby Lightstation and Kelly Hill Caves. Individual prices for Flinders Chase and Seal Bay are also listed. Our 2-day and 3-day trips include national park entry fees.
Has Kangaroo Island recovered from the 2019-20 bushfires?
The island is open and its wildlife is back, though the effects are still visible. The South Australian Government says about 200,000 hectares of the 440,500-hectare island burnt, and that 96 per cent of Flinders Chase National Park was burnt. Native plants began regenerating within weeks, and the department expects koala, kangaroo and wallaby populations to recover as habitat does. Koalas were hit hard, so the department estimated around 8,500 remained after the fires, compared with about 48,000 before.
Questions: before you go
What can you not take to Kangaroo Island?
Bees, honey and bee products, and unwashed or seed potatoes. PIRSA says you cannot bring bees, apiary equipment, honey, honeycomb or beeswax products, because the island has the purest strain of Ligurian bee left in the world. Washed or brushed potatoes are allowed only in new, unopened packaging. Random biosecurity checks happen, and SeaLink publishes a full prohibited items list for travellers.
What is the best time to visit Kangaroo Island?
Spring and autumn give mild weather and good wildlife viewing, spring (September to November) brings wildflowers, and summer suits swimming. The South Australian Tourism Commission also calls winter the best season for wildlife, because southern right whales pass between mid-May and late October. Any season works if you pack for it.
Is Kangaroo Island cold?
It can be, especially in winter and on the exposed south and west coasts. Wind off the Southern Ocean makes the western sights feel cooler than the forecast, so bring a windproof jacket even in spring. Summer is warm, and the beaches are popular for swimming.
Kangaroo Island or the Great Ocean Road?
Choose Kangaroo Island for wildlife you can get close to, such as sea lions and koalas, and the Great Ocean Road for the Twelve Apostles and a classic coastal drive. The island needs a ferry and at least a long day, while the road is an easy day from Melbourne. If you are doing the South Australia stretch of a bigger trip, see our Comparatif des circuits sur la Great Ocean Road et le South Australia backpacker guide.
