Short answer: yes, winter (June to August) is a good time to sail the Whitsundays. The Bureau of Meteorology’s long-term figures for Hamilton Island Airport show mean daily maximums of 21.6 to 22.8 degrees and rainfall dropping to one of the year’s lowest levels by August (26.4 mm, against 297.6 mm in January). Queensland Government guidance puts the higher marine stinger risk at November to May, so winter sits outside it, and humpback whales are reported by some operators from July to September. The trade-off is cooler water and evenings, so a wetsuit is worth having.
Prices are per person in AUD, from our current listings (October 2026), and can change. Boats leave Airlie Beach all year, and Australian school holidays fall in late June to July, so book overnight boats early. For the whole-year view, see best time to visit the Whitsundays.
Winter temperatures and rain
The figures below are long-term averages from the Bureau of Meteorology’s climate statistics for Hamilton Island Airport (station 033106, records from 2002 to 2026). Hamilton Island sits among the islands the boats sail through.
| June | July | August | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Mean maximum temperature | 22.3 C | 21.6 C | 22.8 C |
| Mean minimum temperature | 18.9 C | 18.1 C | 18.5 C |
| Mean rainfall | 56.9 mm | 51.4 mm | 26.4 mm |
| Days with 1 mm or more of rain | 7.6 | 6.0 | 3.5 |
For comparison, the same station’s January mean maximum is 29.9 C and its mean rainfall is 297.6 mm over 13.2 rain days. Winter is the dry half of the year. July is the coolest month, and August is the driest of the three.
Those are airport averages, not a forecast. Weather on any given trip will vary, and skippers adjust routes to conditions. The Bureau’s pages are at bom.gov.au under Climate Data Online.
Is it stinger season in winter?
Not in the official sense. The Queensland Government’s marine stinger guidance says stingers are present in tropical Queensland waters all year round, but the risk is higher during the marine stinger season, November to May. June to August falls outside that window.
In practice, boats still hand out stinger suits on many trips, because the suit doubles as sun protection. Our listings show stinger suits in the inclusions of Atlantic Clipper, New Horizon, PowerPlay and Blizzard, among others. Follow the crew’s instructions on the day.
Whale season
Humpback whales migrate through the Whitsundays in winter. We only have operator-sourced windows: the New Horizon listing says whales pass through July to September, and the same window appears in our best time to visit guide. Nothing in the Whitsundays is sold as a whale trip, so treat a sighting as a bonus. If whales are the point, read the whale watching season guide.
What changes on the boats in winter
Mostly your packing list. The water is cooler than in summer and the evenings are cool on deck, so:
- Wetsuits: the boats that list wetsuits as included are PowerPlay, Summertime, Blizzard, O-Nice, Whitsunday Blue and the Hammer Maxi, plus wetsuit hire on Waltzing Matilda. Others list stinger suits or snorkel gear only, so check the inclusions on the tour page.
- Warm layers: a jumper and long pants for the deck after dark. See the East Coast packing guide.
- Spa or jacuzzi: Atlantic Clipper has a 12-person hot spa, Summertime a freshwater jacuzzi, and PowerPlay a heated jacuzzi. A hot soak is worth more in July than in January.
- Air-conditioning: Atlantic Clipper, New Horizon and PowerPlay list it. It is a cooling feature rather than a winter one, but it also means a cabin you can control.
Wind and sailing
Our best time to visit guide notes the south-east trade winds are strongest through winter, which suits boats where the point is sailing, such as the maxis in Whitsundays sailing boats compared. We have not quoted a wind figure here because the Hamilton Island wind averages published by the Bureau are limited. Ask the crew about the forecast when you check in.
Which trips to look at in winter
- Social and warm: Atlantic Clipper from $689, with the spa and a crowd. New Horizon from $669, up to 32 guests, with whales possible July to September.
- Comfort first: PowerPlay from $699, with wetsuits, heated jacuzzi and air-conditioning. Compare it with the Clipper in Atlantic Clipper vs PowerPlay.
- Smaller and cheaper, one night: Summertime from $469, with wetsuits, linen and a bath towel in the price. See Habibi vs Summertime.
- Private ensuite: Blizzard from $689, up to 10 guests, wetsuits and stinger suits included.

FAQs
Is Whitsundays sailing worth it in winter?
Yes. The Bureau of Meteorology’s averages for Hamilton Island Airport show June to August as the dry, mild half of the year, with daily maximums around 22 degrees and August the driest of the three months.
Is it stinger season in the Whitsundays in June, July and August?
No. The Queensland Government lists the higher-risk marine stinger season as November to May, though stingers are present in tropical Queensland waters all year. Many boats still include stinger suits.
Do I need a wetsuit for Whitsundays snorkelling in winter?
It helps. The water is cooler than in summer. PowerPlay, Summertime, Blizzard, O-Nice and Whitsunday Blue list wetsuits as included.
Can you see whales on a Whitsundays sailing trip?
Possibly. The New Horizon listing says whales pass through July to September. No trip can promise a sighting.
How warm is it on the boat in winter?
Hamilton Island Airport’s long-term mean maximum is 21.6 to 22.8 C from June to August and the mean minimum is 18.1 to 18.9 C, so days are mild and nights cool. Bring a warm layer for the deck.
Do the boats still run in winter?
Boats leave Airlie Beach all year. Pick your date on the tour page to see what is available, especially around the late June to July school holidays.
