Short answer
If you want the social trip, book an ex-racing maxi (from $689) or a big party boat with a waterslide and a spa (from $689). If you want a quieter trip with a real cabin, the small-crew yachts and ketches start from $449 and the catamarans and ensuite boats run from $689 to $1,039. Most of the fleet runs 2D/2N (from $639); 2D/1N is one night at anchor (from $449), and 3D/2N adds a whole extra day on the water (from $689).
Prices are per person in AUD, from our current listings (October 2026), and can change. For the same fleet sorted cheapest first, see Whitsundays sailing trips by price.
Every overnight boat out of Airlie Beach visits roughly the same places: Whitehaven Beach, the Hill Inlet lookout and a couple of fringing-reef snorkel stops among the islands. What changes is the boat: how many people are on it, where you sleep, and whether the crew’s idea of a good night is a deck party or a quiet anchorage. Pick the vibe first, then the length, then the price. Still deciding whether to sleep on a boat at all? Read the day sail vs overnight guide first.

Maxi and racing yachts: fast, social, basic
These are the boats people mean when they say “the backpacker sail”. Big ex-racing hulls that actually sail, 20-plus people aboard, bunks rather than cabins.
Hammer Maxi Sailing, 2 Days, 2 Nights in the Whitsundays from $689 is the pick for sailing itself: a genuine ex-racing maxi with a skipper and two deckhands, up to three reef snorkel spots, all meals cooked by the crew, hot showers, hammocks and yoga mats so you can sleep on deck under the stars. Up to 23 aboard.
Apollo Whitsundays Sailing 3D/2N from $689 and British Defender, 3 Days, 2 Nights from $699 are the three-day maxis, both up to 27. Apollo (16+) has air-con, snorkels at Stonehaven Bay and Langford Reef, the southern end of Whitehaven and the Ngaro Caves if visited; breakfast on day one and towels are not included. British Defender is the most modern maxi in its fleet, with snorkel tuition, stinger suit, linen and marina levies in, and an 18–30s social crowd.
Avatar, Whitsundays Racing Yacht, 2 Days 2 Nights from $669 is described as one of Australia’s fastest racing yachts ever offered for charter, up to 26 aboard. The listing does not itemise inclusions, so check the tour page before comparing on price.
Eureka Whitsundays Sailing 2 Days from $679 is the odd one out: a 60ft maxi with a Sydney racing past but only ten aboard, an owner-skipper with 30 years at sea, private or shared cabins, Netflix, wifi and guided walks to island lookouts. Ages 12+. The listing gives two days without stating nights.
Who they suit Solo travellers, 18 to 30s, anyone who wants to pull on a rope. Not for light sleepers or people who need a door.
Party boats: slides, spas and big crowds
Here the boat is the venue.
Atlantic Clipper from $689 is the biggest: a tall ship for up to 54 (18+) with a 12-person hot spa on deck, two waterslides including an eight-metre one, a six-metre dive platform, air-con, hot showers, 21 cabins in two, three and four-berth layouts, and a walk-in cold room for the BYO. Bath and beach towels are not included.
New Horizon Whitsundays Sailing 2 Days from $669 is a 21-metre traditional sailing vessel for up to 32, with an eight-metre water slide, dive platform, air-con, hot showers, esky space for your drinks and an after-party on land afterwards. Whales are possible in season (July to September).
Spank Me Whitsundays Sailing 2 Days 2 Nights from $639 is the most hands-on: hoist the mainsail, help the crew cook, snorkel every day at spots like Luncheon Bay and Blue Pearl Bay. Sleeping is 27 bunks in open-plan share rooms. Alcohol and snacks are extra.
Summer Jo, 2 Days, 2 Nights in the Whitsundays from $689 runs 18 to 32 aboard after a $1 million refit, with meals, linen, bath towel, snorkel gear and marine park fees included, plus dive gear if you take up a dive.
Who they suit Groups of mates, hostel crews who met last week, anyone who wants the night to go late.
Small-crew yachts and ketches
Fewer people, more sailing, quieter nights. This is where the 2D/1N trips live.
Habibi 2 Day 1 Night Whitsunday Sailing from $449 gives everyone a private double, twin or single cabin. An 18-metre steel ketch sailing these waters for 20-plus years, with two to three reef snorkel stops, a night anchored in a quiet cove and sailing instruction if you want it.
Summertime, 2 Day Whitsundays Ketch from $469 is a refurbished 70-year-old ketch for up to 17 (18+) with a kayak for every guest, a freshwater jacuzzi, air-con below, linen, bath towel and park fees included.
Waltzing Matilda Whitsundays Sailing, 2 Days 1 Night from $509 takes 8 to 15, is family friendly with a private cabin available, and fits three snorkels into two days (Hook Passage or Border Island, and Peter’s Bay). Wetsuits, tuition and marine park fees are in.
Prima Whitsundays Adventure Sailing, 2 Days 1 Night from $579 is the smallest group at 6 to 12, with a skipper and host, private and shared cabins, linen, bath towels and Starlink wifi. Special diets carry a surcharge at check-in.
Who they suit Couples, friends who want to talk at dinner, first-time sailors, anyone over the hostel scene.
Catamarans: stable, roomy, air-conditioned
Powerplay (2 Day / 2 Night) from $699 is a fast, air-conditioned catamaran for a maximum of 16 (16+) with a heated jacuzzi on deck, private cabins, paddleboards, wifi, linen and bath towels.
O-Nice Whitsundays Sailing Catamaran 2 Days from $739 takes just nine, ages 6 and up, in private ensuite cabins, with four toilets and showers, paddleboards, a glass-bottom kayak and children’s life jackets.
Who they suit Anyone who gets seasick on monohulls, families, and travellers who want a stable, roomy boat.
Private ensuite boats
Blizzard Whitsundays Sailing 3D/2N from $689 is the three-day one: three days, up to ten people, private ensuite cabins, three toilets and showers, both ends of Whitehaven, three hours at the Hill Inlet site, and snorkelling at Mantaray Bay, Butterfly Bay and Langford Island.
Whitsunday Blue Whitsundays Sailing 2D/2N from $1,039 is the full-comfort option: small group, relaxed pace, private ensuite cabins with air-con, paddleboards, meals from locally sourced ingredients, underwater blue lights at night, and the only listing that includes beach towels. 18+.
Who they suit Couples, anyone celebrating something, people who have done the party boat already.
2D/1N vs 2D/2N vs 3D/2N
2D/1N (from $449 to $579): one night at anchor, Whitehaven and Hill Inlet, two or three snorkels. All four boats in this bracket are small-crew yachts or ketches, so it is the quiet option by default.
2D/2N (from $639): the standard format, run by the party boats, the maxis and the catamarans. Two nights aboard and two full days among the islands.
3D/2N (from $689 to $699): the same two nights with a full extra day on the water. Only Blizzard, Apollo and British Defender run it: Blizzard from $689, Apollo from $689 and British Defender from $699.
FAQs
Which Whitsundays boat is best for solo travellers? A maxi or party boat. Hammer, Apollo, British Defender and Spank Me all carry 23 to 27 people in shared bunks, which is where you meet your crew for the rest of the coast.
Which boats have private cabins? Habibi (every guest), Prima and Eureka (private or shared), Waltzing Matilda (available), Powerplay, and Blizzard, O-Nice and Whitsunday Blue (with ensuites).
Which boats have age limits? Summertime, Atlantic Clipper and Whitsunday Blue are 18+. Apollo is 17+. Powerplay and British Defender are 16+. Eureka is 12+ and O-Nice is 6+. The rest are all ages welcome.
Is a 3D/2N worth it over a 2D/2N? If the price is the same, yes: the third day is sailing time you would otherwise spend in Airlie.
Does every boat visit Whitehaven Beach and Hill Inlet? Every overnight boat in the table lists both except Avatar and Summer Jo, whose listings do not itemise stops. The Whitehaven and Hill Inlet guide explains what you see at each.
Can I bring alcohol? Almost every overnight boat is BYO. Hammer and Prima ban glass, and Atlantic Clipper has a walk-in cold room. Spank Me and Apollo list alcohol as excluded, so check their pages for the BYO policy.
