Backpacking the East Coast of Australia: The Questions People Ask, Answered

How long, how far, how much, when to go and how to travel: straight answers to the most-asked questions about backpacking the East Coast of Australia, Sydney to Cairns.

L'équipe Wanderlust · Mis à jour · 7 min de lecture

Réponse courte : allow three to four weeks for Sydney to Cairns, two weeks if you start in Brisbane or fly a leg. It is about 2,600 km by road (roughly 2,400 km inland), and most backpackers ride a hop-on hop-off bus pass or join a tour rather than drive. A solo backpacker builds the cheapest trip with a bus pass and hostels. Semi-guided and fully guided trips book the big days for you, and there is no through train: the Spirit of Queensland covers only Brisbane to Cairns.

Rail facts below were checked against Queensland Rail and NSW TrainLink on 27 October 2026, and the rest against our own current itineraries and guides, which are linked for depth.

Questions: how long and how far

How long do you need for the East Coast of Australia?

Three to four weeks is the sweet spot for Sydney to Cairns. That is enough for Sydney, Byron Bay, Noosa, K’gari (Fraser Island), the Whitsundays, Magnetic Island and the Great Barrier Reef without a rushed day. Five to six weeks is relaxed, and two weeks works for a shorter slice. Our Sydney to Cairns page has the full breakdown.

Can you do the East Coast of Australia in 2 weeks?

Yes, if you do Brisbane to Cairns rather than the whole coast. Two weeks covers Noosa, K’gari, the Whitsundays and the reef, with about three days mostly in transit. The full Sydney to Cairns run needs three weeks minimum, or a flight over one leg. See the itinéraire de 2 semaines sur la côte est, ou le 14-day Brisbane to Cairns trip dès 1 649 €.

Is 3 weeks enough for the East Coast of Australia?

Yes. Three weeks covers the icons from Sydney to Cairns without rushing: Sydney, Byron Bay, Brisbane, Rainbow Beach for K’gari, Airlie Beach for the Whitsundays, then Cairns for the reef. The itinéraire de 21 jours avec les prix réels lays it out day by day.

Is 4 weeks too long for the East Coast?

No. Four weeks lets you slow down: more nights in Byron Bay and Magnetic Island, a surf camp, and side trips such as the Atherton Tablelands. Costs and day-by-day are in the 4-week East Coast guide.

How far is Sydney to Cairns?

About 2,600 km by the main road, which is over 30 hours of driving. The inland route is shorter, at roughly 2,400 km, and the usual backpacker route with its detours runs closer to 3,000 km. A direct flight takes roughly three hours. That distance is why most backpackers use overnight coaches on the two longest legs.

How long does it take to drive from Sydney to Cairns?

Allow at least 30 hours of driving, which is five or six days at a sensible pace. Do not drive tired: Brisbane to Cairns alone is roughly 1,700 km. Our comparatif van aménagé ou pass de bus covers what a drive costs and who it suits.

Where does the East Coast of Australia start and end?

Most backpackers start in Sydney and finish in Cairns, which is the classic route. Some start in Melbourne and add the Great Ocean Road, which is how our 30-day Melbourne to Cairns trip works. Others start in Brisbane for a two-week run. You can also go in reverse, Cairns to Sydney.

Can you travel Sydney to Cairns by train?

Not in one go. NSW TrainLink runs a daily XPT between Sydney and Brisbane, which it lists at about 14 hours. Queensland Rail’s Spirit of Queensland then runs Brisbane to Cairns, 1,681 km in about 25 hours, departing Brisbane on Monday, Wednesday, Friday and Saturday (checked 27 October 2026). The train skips most backpacker stops such as Rainbow Beach, so a bus pass fits the route better.

Questions: how to travel

What is the best way to travel the East Coast of Australia?

For a solo backpacker, the lowest-cost way is a hop-on hop-off bus pass from 209 € plus hostels and tours you book yourself. The easiest way is a guided group tour or a semi-guided trip, where the big days are booked for you. For most 18 to 35 year olds doing three to five weeks, semi-guided is the sweet spot. Compare all three in pass de bus, circuit en groupe ou semi-guidé.

Is a Greyhound East Coast bus pass worth it?

Yes, if you want freedom and have time. The pass gives unlimited hop-on hop-off travel on the East Coast in any direction, from 209 € and in lengths from 7 to 45 days. It covers the coach only, so beds, K’gari, the Whitsundays and the reef are extra. In December to February and school holidays, book coach legs a few days ahead. See how much a Greyhound pass costs et le bus pass prices.

Do you need a car for the East Coast of Australia?

No. The coast is built for backpackers without one: buses and overnight coaches link the main stops, and the big trips (K’gari, the Whitsundays, the reef) pick up from town. A campervan suits couples and groups with a licence and time, and for a solo traveller it is the most expensive option by a long way. See van aménagé (campervan) vs pass de bus vs circuit.

Is a Travel Mates trip or a group tour worth it?

Worth it if you want the big days booked and a crew to travel with. Travel Mates is our own semi-guided format: the route, nights and activities are set and pre-booked, and guides run only the big days, like the K’gari 4WD trip, the Whitsundays sail and the reef. You choose the start date. A fully guided group tour adds a leader the whole way, from 759 € for 10 days. Details are on the page Travel Mates and in what Travel Mates trips cost.

How much money do you need for the East Coast of Australia?

A semi-guided four weeks is from 2 739 € with the bus pass, beds and big adventures included. Meals, drinks and extras on free days come on top. Questions: when to go and which way

What is the best time to travel the East Coast of Australia?

April to May and September to October. They are warm, mostly dry and quieter than the school holiday peaks. May to October is the dry season in the tropical north, so it is the easiest window for the full run. December to March brings heat, heavy rain and cyclone risk, and stinger season runs roughly November to May. The month-by-month guide has the detail.

Should you go north to south or south to north?

Either works, and our semi-guided trips cost the same in both directions. Sydney to Cairns means it gets warmer as you go and you finish on the reef. Heading south from Cairns suits you if you land there. A bus pass works in both directions, and our semi-guided full-coast trips (except the Melbourne start) run either way.

Questions: safety

Is the East Coast of Australia safe for solo travellers?

Yes. It is one of the most popular solo routes in the world, because hostels, shared tours and overnight boats mean you are rarely alone unless you choose to be. The real risks are specific: swim between the red and yellow flags, never swim alone at night, wear the stinger suit in the warmer months and obey crocodile warning signs in the north. Read the guide du voyage en solo et le best tours for solo travellers.

Questions: what to see

What are the must-do stops on the East Coast of Australia?

K’gari (Fraser Island), the Whitsundays and the Great Barrier Reef, plus Byron Bay. K’gari is the world’s largest sand island, done as a 4WD tag-along or tour. The Whitsundays are a sail among white-sand islands, and the reef is a day or more out of Cairns or Port Douglas. See K’gari tour prices et le Whitsundays sailing prices.

Which East Coast stops can you skip?

Skip whatever you do not care about, because no stop is compulsory. If time is short, the usual cuts are the southern end (fly to Brisbane or start there) or a second night in a stop you have already seen. Keep the three big adventures: K’gari, the Whitsundays and the reef. Our Itinéraire de 2 semaines shows what a trimmed route looks like.

What should you pack for the East Coast of Australia?

The season-by-season checklist is in que mettre dans ton sac pour la côte est.
