Réponse courte : Rottnest Island (Wadjemup) is a car-free island about 18 to 19 km off the Perth coast, reached by ferry from Fremantle (about 30 minutes), Hillarys (about 45 minutes) or Perth’s Barrack Street (about 1 hour 30). It is easy as a day trip: a same-day return leaves most of the day on the island. Every visitor pays the Rottnest Island Authority admission fee, which is 19 € for an adult on a single day (checked Oct 2026), and you get around by bike, on foot or on the Island Explorer bus. Look for quokkas near the Thomson Bay settlement, and do not touch or feed them.
Facts below were checked on 27 October 2026 against the Rottnest Island Authority (rottnestisland.com and ria.wa.gov.au), the ferry operators Rottnest Express and Rottnest Fast Ferries, and Tourism Western Australia. Fares and timetables change, so confirm on the day you book.
Questions: getting there
How do you get to Rottnest Island?
By ferry, or by air for the skydive and helicopter options. There are three main ferry departure points: Fremantle (B Shed), Hillarys Boat Harbour and Perth (Barrack Street Jetty). Fremantle is the shortest crossing and the most popular for day trippers. Hillarys suits you if you are north of the river, and it has free parking.
How long is the ferry to Rottnest?
About 30 minutes from Fremantle, about 45 minutes from Hillarys and about 1 hour 30 from Barrack Street in Perth, according to the operators. Hillarys is a 19 km crossing. Our Hillarys day return ferry coûte dès 69 €, and the Fremantle options are listed below.
How much is the ferry to Rottnest?
From Fremantle B Shed, Rottnest Express lists an adult same-day return passenger fare of 49 €, plus the island admission fee of 14 €, so 59 € in total (checked Oct 2026). Other departure points and operators price differently. If you want the fare and extras bundled, our Fremantle ferry packages start at Hillarys ferry and bike combo at 79 €.
Do you need to book the Rottnest ferry in advance?
Booking ahead is the safe choice, especially for weekends, school holidays and summer. Ferries run daily, but the operators note that peaks fill up, and bike hire can sell out on busy days. Book the ferry and your bike together so neither is a gamble.
Is the Rottnest Island admission fee included in the ferry price?
Not always. The Rottnest Island Authority charges everyone who arrives by ferry, plane, helicopter or boat. For a single day it is 19 € for adults and 6,94 € for children aged 4 to 16, and children under 4 are free (checked Oct 2026, valid 1 July 2026 to 30 June 2027). If you stay overnight the adult fee is 19 €. Check each listing’s inclusions: our Hillarys Bike and Ferry Combo lists the admission fee as included, while the ferry-only fare does not.
Questions: how long and where to stay
Can you do Rottnest Island as a day trip?
Yes, and most people do. A same-day return from Fremantle or Hillarys gives you roughly 7 to 8 hours on the island, depending on the sailing you pick. That covers a swim, a bike ride and quokka spotting without rushing. Our Fremantle day trip with bike hire runs about 8 hours and is from 89 €.
Can you do Rottnest in a half day?
You can see the settlement, The Basin and a couple of bays in a half day, but you will be watching the clock. Sailing times decide this, because the first and last ferries set your window. If you only have a morning, pick one area (Thomson Bay and The Basin) instead of trying to circle the island.
How long do you need on Rottnest Island?
One full day is enough for the highlights. Add a second day if you want to cycle the whole island, snorkel properly and still have a lazy beach afternoon. One day gives you the headline stops, two days gives you a pace.
Can you stay overnight on Rottnest Island?
Yes. The Rottnest Island Authority lists a hostel and dorms, self-contained units, eco-tents, a lodge, a hotel-style property and 43 non-powered sand campsites. Overnight stays use the extended-stay admission fee of 18 € for adults (checked Oct 2026). Accommodation books out in school holidays, so reserve early.
Questions: getting around
Can you drive on Rottnest Island?
No. Rottnest is car-free: private cars are not used on the island, and visitors get around by bike, bus or on foot. Service vehicles aside, the roads belong to cyclists and walkers.
How do you get around Rottnest Island?
Bike is the classic answer, on foot works for the settlement area, and the Island Explorer hop-on hop-off bus connects 19 stops including Wadjemup Lighthouse and the West End. The bus runs roughly 8.45am to 3pm at about 15-minute intervals (check the day’s timetable). Our Bayseeker bus tour package adds a 1 hour 30 minute narrated loop and is from 99 €.
Is Rottnest Island hilly for cycling?
It is mostly manageable with a few real hills. The Rottnest Island Authority describes the full island ride as more challenging, because the hills can get steep and the roads wind. The settlement, The Basin and the nearby bays are gentle enough for most people, and an e-bike takes the sting out of the climbs.
How long does it take to cycle around Rottnest Island?
The Island Ride is about 22 km and takes around 3 to 5 hours, according to the Rottnest Island Authority, depending on how often you stop. Plan a full-day pace if you want to reach the West End. If you are short on time, the 4 km Rotto Mini Loop around the settlement is the easy option. Our Hillarys bike combo coûte dès 79 €.
Questions: quokkas, beaches and weather
Where can you see quokkas on Rottnest Island?
Mostly around Thomson Bay and the settlement, where the shade, water and scraps of vegetation draw them in. Early morning and late afternoon are the best times. Rottnest is one of the very few places you can see them easily in the wild, so they are the island’s headline act.
Can you touch or feed a quokka?
No. The Rottnest Island Authority says not to touch quokkas and not to feed them, because human food and water are harmful to them and touching can spread disease. Deliberately interfering with or feeding wildlife can bring an on-the-spot fine and prosecution, with penalties up to 6 307 € under the Wildlife Conservation Act. Take your photo from a respectful distance and let them come to you.
What are the best beaches and snorkelling spots on Rottnest?
The Basin is the best-known swimming spot, a sheltered, shallow bay close to the settlement. Parker Point has a marked snorkel trail with information plaques on the sea floor. Both sit on the main bike route, so you can combine them in a day. Bring or hire your own snorkel gear and check conditions on the day.
When is the best time to visit Rottnest Island, and is winter worth it?
Summer is peak swimming season, but the island works all year. In winter the Rottnest Island Authority reports average daytime temperatures around 19 degrees with the sea at about 18 degrees, and humpback whales pass from roughly September to November. Joeys start appearing around August and September. Our Adventure Boat Ride coûte dès 109 € and looks for whales in season.
Is Rottnest Island worth it?
Yes, if you like beaches, bikes and wildlife in one easy day out of Perth. It is the simplest big-name outing from the city, with a short ferry, clear water and animals that are not found in most other places. If you want something louder than a bike ride, add one of the guided options below.
Questions: tours and the skydive
What is the best guided way to see Rottnest?
It depends on your energy. The Grand Island package coûte dès 139 € and adds a historic train ride plus a guided bus tour of Wadjemup Lighthouse, the Oliver Hill gun fortification and Cape Vlamingh. The Settlement Explorer Segway tour coûte dès 119 €. Operators set the itineraries, and each includes the return ferry from Fremantle.
Can you skydive over Rottnest Island?
Yes. We sell a 10,000ft tandem skydive dès 309 € with about 30 seconds of freefall, and a 15,000ft tandem skydive dès 379 € with about 66 seconds of freefall, described by the operator as the highest legal jump in Australia. Landings are on the beach. The ferry to the island is separate, and the 15,000ft operator lists a minimum age of 16 and a 95 kg weight limit, with heavier jumpers considered case by case. See our skydiving questions answered for the full rundown.
