Short answer: in Australian rental fleets a motorhome is the van with its own shower and toilet; a campervan usually has neither. On the same trip the step up is smaller than people expect: a Mighty Highball campervan was $1,344 for 7 nights Sydney to Brisbane in November 2026 and the Mighty Duo motorhome was $1,624, about $40 a night more. The big gap is against a budget campervan, which was $490 to $562 for the same week. Pick a motorhome for families, cold-weather trips and anyone who wants a shower at 2am. Pick a campervan for couples and backpackers who are happy using campground amenities. What actually counts as a motorhome?
Rental companies draw the line at the bathroom. The Mighty Duo, Mighty Deuce, Apollo Euro Mini, Apollo Euro Tourer and Britz Trailblazer each list a toilet and shower on the operator’s own vehicle page. The hi-tops from the same companies (Mighty Highball, Apollo Hitop, Britz HiTop) give you standing room and a proper kitchen but no bathroom. The budget wagons from Spaceships, Awesome Campers and JUCY are a bed and a kitchen in a people-mover body.
There are in-between vans. The JUCY Coaster has a portable cassette toilet but no shower, so it sits between the two. If the toilet is the only thing you care about, ask for vans like it and save on the full motorhome rate.
All of these drive on a standard car licence. A motorhome is longer and taller than a hi-top and handles more like a small truck, so city car parks, drive-through bottle shops and the tight lookouts on the Great Ocean Road take more care.
The real price gap on the same trip
Same route, same dates, same driver (aged 26), operator website totals including compulsory fees and the basic included cover.
Sydney to Brisbane, 7 nights, 10 to 17 November 2026 (checked 22 and 29 October 2026):
| Van | Type | Total |
|---|---|---|
| Awesome Campers Compact | Budget campervan | $490 |
| Spaceships Alpha | Budget campervan | $515 |
| Mighty Highball | Hi-top campervan | $1,344 |
| Apollo Hitop | Hi-top campervan | $1,664 |
| Mighty Duo | 2-berth motorhome | $1,624 |
| Apollo Euro Mini | 2-berth motorhome | $1,704 |
| Maui Ultima Plus Elite | Premium motorhome | $2,808 |
Hobart round trip, 12 nights (the Tasmania loop):
| Dates | Mighty Highball (campervan) | Mighty Duo (motorhome) | Difference |
|---|---|---|---|
| 10 to 22 Nov 2026 | $2,084 | $2,504 | $420 |
| 5 to 17 Jan 2027 | $2,644 | $3,081 | $437 |
| 8 to 20 Jun 2027 | $1,690 | $2,119 | $429 |
At Mighty, the Duo motorhome cost $35 to $40 a night more than the Highball hi-top on every trip we checked; at Apollo, the Euro Mini was only $40 more than the Hitop for the whole week. Between companies, the cheapest motorhome on the Sydney to Brisbane week was cheaper than the dearest hi-top. So the question is rarely “can I afford a motorhome” and more often “do I want a hi-top with a bathroom, or would I rather have a budget van and $1,000 for the reef”.
On top of the hire, budget more fuel for a motorhome. Rental motorhomes typically use 8 to 14 litres per 100 km, and on a 3,000 km East Coast run that adds up.
Where the bathroom earns its money
Free camping. A growing number of free and low-cost camps in Australia are signed for self-contained vehicles only, meaning the van has its own toilet and holds its grey water. A motorhome opens those up. A campervan without a toilet is limited to sites with amenities. Our free camping guides by state show which sites have toilets.
Families. Four people sharing one campground toilet block at night gets old fast. The Mighty Double Up (4 berth) and Big Six (6 berth) both have a shower and toilet. A 4-berth campervan like the Britz Voyager or Apollo Endeavour is cheaper but has no bathroom.
Cold or wet trips. Tasmania in winter, Victoria in July, or the tropics in a downpour. Getting dressed and showering inside the van matters more when the amenities block is a wet sprint away.
Long trips. Three weeks and over, most couples start to value the extra room and the shower. On a one-week hop it matters much less.
Where a campervan is the better call
Backpackers and tight budgets. A budget campervan at $490 to $562 a week versus $1,624 for the cheapest motorhome is the difference between a van and a van plus K’gari, the Whitsundays and the reef. You will be staying in caravan parks or campgrounds with showers most nights anyway.
Narrow, winding roads. Tasmania’s west coast, the Great Ocean Road and the Gold Coast hinterland are easier in a smaller van. Long motorhomes are slower on the climbs and harder to park at lookouts.
Short trips and city starts. If you are in Sydney or Melbourne traffic on day one and returning in a week, a campervan is less stress.
Couples who sleep, cook and go. A hi-top gives you standing room, a real kitchen and a fridge/freezer for well under the motorhome price, and many campgrounds have better showers than any van.
Which one for which route?
- Sydney to Cairns: campervan for backpackers and couples, motorhome for families. The route is lined with caravan parks.
- Tasmania loop: either. The motorhome makes most sense from May to September, when nights are cold, and the campervan when you want the cheapest trip. See campervan hire in Tasmania for prices by season.
- Darwin to Adelaide: a motorhome suits the long gaps between towns; a hi-top does it fine if you plan around roadhouses and caravan parks.
- Melbourne to Adelaide: campervan. The Great Ocean Road is easier in something smaller.
- Outback tracks: neither. You need a 4WD campervan; see 4WD campervan hire.
FAQs
Do I need a special licence to drive a motorhome in Australia? No. The 2 to 6 berth rental motorhomes from Mighty, Apollo, Britz and Maui are driven on a standard car licence. Overseas visitors need a licence in English or an International Driving Permit, same as for a campervan.
Is a motorhome worth it for two people? On a week-long trip with caravan parks every night, usually not. On three weeks or more, in winter, or if you want to use self-contained-only free camps, the $35 to $40 a night more than a Mighty hi-top is good value.
Can I empty the toilet myself? Yes. Caravan parks and many towns have dump points. The operator shows you how at pick-up.
Which is cheaper over the whole trip? A campervan, once you add fuel. A motorhome can claw some back on free camps that only allow self-contained vehicles, but rarely all of it.
